Stats insider: Full round 23 centre bounce numbers, key SuperCoach intel

See the key numbers that can help you win a SuperCoach grand final, including the inside word on Brodie Grundy and full round 23 CBAs.

Brodie Grundy was one of the smartest picks of the 2024 SuperCoach season ... until he wasn’t.

At round 16 the Swans recruit hit $640k, a gain of $160k on his bargain starting price. He had a season average of 117 and a three-round average of 144 after a trio of matchwinning performances.

But since then his season has gone off the rails, with just one score over 100 in his next eight matches, culminating in a season-low score of 68 points against Essendon on Friday night.

Remarkably, he is now $5000 cheaper than he was in round 1.

The short explanation is a long season looks to be catching up with the Swans ruckman. He played only 76 minutes in round 23 – his fewest this year.

Grundy has failed to take a mark over the last two weeks and since the bye rounds he has topped 20 disposals just once. He reached that benchmark in more than half of his games in the first 15 rounds.

Defensively, his tackling has also dropped away slightly while his work in the clinches isn’t the same, either – averaging 9.6 contested possessions since round 16, down from 13.2 in the first 15 rounds.

In terms of his ruck numbers, his hitout-to-advantage rate has fallen from 30.1 per cent to 24.8 per cent.

Grundy is averaging 27 fewer points post byes.

DANIELS EXPLODES

Brent Daniels’ 195 points was a career-high and the second-highest score for the year.

Efficiency was the key with just one negative act from a total of 79 for the game – a handball clanger.

He started well with 52 points in the first term and ended with a 62-point final term – collecting seven disposals, four contested possessions, four tackles and one score assist.

Daniels collected an equal season-high 29 disposals, of which 24 were effective.

HUMPHRIES’ HALF MEASURES

Like the Cats themselves, Saturday night’s clash against St Kilda was a match of two halves for Lawson Humphries. He collected 80 points in the first half and was the No.1 ranked player on the ground – hitting the target with 17 of 19 disposals.

In the second half he added just five disposals and 25 points.

GF TAGGER WATCH (1)

Caleb Serong had the better of Toby Bedford last round, winning 23 disposals in the 108 minutes they were matched up. It was a rare win against this year’s surprise tagging star.

This week the Giants face the Western Bulldogs – when these teams met in round 10 Bedford spent time on Bailey Dale, while Callan Ward did an important job on Marcus Bontempelli, who managed just nine disposals in the 57 minutes they spent together.

GF TAGGER WATCH (2)

Zach Merrett had just 10 disposals in the 88 minutes he was matched up on James Jordon on Friday night. He fell below 20 disposals for the match for the first time this season and also recorded a season-low two score involvements and an equal season-low two tackles.

Jordon wasn’t assigned a tagging job when the Swans last faced Adelaide in round 14.

GF TAGGER WATCH (3)

Alex Neal-Bullen has an excellent record as a tagger this season, with his scalps including Dan Houston, Brodie Smith, Dayne Zorko, Zach Merrett and this week’s likely opponent Nick Daicos.

He kept Daicos to just 14 disposals in the 82 minutes they were matched up in round 13.

ROUND 23 CBA, KICK-IN KINGS

In other key stat moves last weekend:

CBAs and points down always mix, at least for Errol Gulden. He attended 17 CBAs against Essendon, his highest rate a month and only the second time he has been at more than 60 per cent of CBAs this year. The result was 25 disposals and 84 SuperCoach points. Luke Parker and Taylor Adams also had big CBA spikes at the Swans.

CARLTON’S Matt Kennedy attended one centre bounce against the Eagles after he was at 14 the week before. He still scored 99 SuperCoach points from 23 disposals and two goals.

CONNOR Rozee’s CBA rate of 41 per cent was his lowest since returning from injury in round 14.

RORY Laird’s CBA numbers have evaporated, attending just two in the Showdown and zero in each of the previous two weeks.

LUKE Jackson attended 33 per cent of CBAs for Fremantle with debutant Liam Reidy taking most centre bounces.

LIAM Stocker was used as a CBA mid for St Kilda, attending 26 after zero the week before. He replaced Zak Jones, who dropped from 21 CBAs to six. Stocker still managed to take a behind kick-in – his only one for the season.

THE return of Zak Fisher ate into Colby McKercher’s kick-in numbers. He was still No.1 for the Roos with six, down from his totals of 11 and 13 the past two weeks. Fisher took five kick-ins, playing on from all of them.
