KFC SuperCoach trade grades: Experts reveal their Round 10 plans and rate your moves

Having trouble making money in KFC SuperCoach this week? Here’s how our experts plan to generate cash and where they will spend it.

KFC SuperCoach AFL: Round 9 Hot & Cold

There is plenty of value again on offer in KFC SuperCoach ahead of Round 10 but how do you get the money?

That is the question many KFC SuperCoaches are pondering, our experts included.

Is there still merit in jumping on Riley Collier-Dawkins after one price rise? Or can you pick Lachie Jones even if he doesn’t play this week?

To help you answer these questions, and decide on your latest KFC SuperCoach trades, here is what Al Paton, The Phantom, Tim Michell and Dan Batten are planning.

AL PATON

MY TRADES: None.

I’m making my biggest trade call of the season and not making any moves this week. I’ve got only 14 trades left after using two every week of the season so far and I’m going to have to pull up at some point or I’ll run out before we even get to the byes. And after making a major upgrade last week (Tom Mitchell) and picking up Riley Collier-Dawkins and Caleb Poulter over the past two rounds, I’ve got about $40k in the bank and not many avenues to find the cash I would need to upgrade a rookie like Tom Powell. I’m hoping he can rebound from last week’s down game - his first score under 70 since Round 3 - and hold his price at least until the Kangaroos’ Round 12 bye.

THE PHANTOM

MY TRADES: Tom Powell to Dayne Zorko (via Dev Robertson), Jacob Koschitzke to Lachie Jones.

An interesting week for KFC SuperCoach trades. I’d love to bring in Jack Steele at $569k, but his addition would make Round 14 harder for me than it already is. And it’s probably about time I look at my forward line, anyway. There will probably be another low score from Zorko but he’s close to a top-three lock from here. From a money perspective, this is the week to maximise Tom Powell’s value and he’s the one I’m leaning towards trading, given it leaves me with $114k for next round. But Powell, who has a good bye, is unlikely to score in the 40s again, and I can’t say the same about my on-field forward rookies, so it could be Chad Warner who makes way – especially now Andy Brayshaw is set to miss in the midfield. That $114k bank is only if I downgrade Koschitzke to Jones, something I’ll still consider doing this

week even if the Power draftee returns through the SANFL.

ROUND 10 LATE MAIL: BIG BLOW WITH POPULAR MID SET TO MISS

CONSENSUS VERDICT: THE TOP-6 SUPERCOACH FORWARDS FROM HERE

TIM MICHELL

MY TRADES: Miles Bergman and Tom Powell to Dayne Zorko and Lachie Jones (pending selection).

This is my ideal scenario this week. I’ve missed the boat on Riley Collier-Dawkins but I can find a silver lining if Jones comes straight back into the Port Adelaide side. I’m tipping he’s picked in the SANFL, though, which would force me to reconsider my plans and go for a player such as Nathan Murphy. Bergman and Powell both have Round 12 byes so there’s no issue jumping off now. Zorko has been one of the most consistent premium scorers in any position this year and showed his huge ceiling with 140 last week against Gold Coast. He’s going to be in the top-two forwards with Jack Ziebell at the end of the year as long as he doesn’t fall victim to the injury curse which so many forward premos have. Fingers crossed.

DAN BATTEN

MY TRADES: Tom Powell to Dustin Martin (pending selection of Lachie Jones)

After burning through trades across the first eight rounds – using 15 of a possible 16 – I am opting to use one this week to bring in a discounted Dustin Martin. The one positive of trading in Tom Mitchell ahead of Round 9 was saving some cash to go from a rookie straight to a forward premium. Martin has a handy record against Brisbane and has lit up the Gabba in recent appearances. The biggest call I am making here is passing on an inflated Riley Collier-Dawkins. I still feel I should have bought him last week in hindsight, but the news that four Richmond midfielders could return next week means it probably isn’t a worthwhile investment. I expect him to get at least a couple more games, but if he has quieter returns he may find himself on the fringes. You’d think Lachie Jones plays in the SANFL this round but if he receives a senior call-up, he is probably too good to pass up as a rookie option.

Trade grades: Expert verdict on big SuperCoach moves

This could be the toughest week of trading in KFC SuperCoach this year — and it’s been a very challenging year.

Unless you have built a bank of cash already there is no easy way to find some to go shopping for more stars to add to our teams.

The solution many are favouring is buying Tiger youngster Riley Collier-Dawkins who has already jumped $60,000 in price after his first game, but is that the right play? And should we trade out star rookie Tom Powell after one bad game?

Some dirt cheap stars on offer this week make these kind of moves very tempting, but those players come with their own risks.

So what should we do? KFC SuperCoach experts Al Paton, Tim Michell, Dan Batten and The Phantom give their verdict on the most popular trades of the week.

MOST TRADED OUT

TOM POWELL $375,700 MID

Al Paton: HOLD/TRADE — This is probably his maximum price so if he helps you get a top-tier midfielder that’s great, but if you are prepared to cop a small price drop he will be handy cover over the most difficult weeks of the byes.

Tim Michell: TRADE — You’re likely to trade him when he has his bye in Round 12 anyway, so why not accelerate your pursuit of a full premium team and offload him now? He’s done his job by making more than $200,000 and is the perfect stepping stone to a fallen premium.

Dan Batten: TRADE — We advised to hold him until the bye until last week with his scoring potential, but is set to leak cash if he produces another substandard score.

The Phantom: TRADE/HOLD — In a pure stock market sense, now is the time. But, if he isn’t rested, he’s unlikely to score in the 40s again.

TRADE GUIDE: SUPERCOACH FORWARD LINE FINALLY TAKING SHAPE

Errol Gulden has been diagnosed with a stress reaction in his foot.
Errol Gulden has been diagnosed with a stress reaction in his foot.

ERROL GULDEN $282,900 MID

AP: TRADE — News this week he has a foot injury that will keep him out for six weeks, so no reason to hold.

TM: TRADE — Ruled out with a stress issue in his foot until after the Round 14 bye. If you were hoping he would help cover Round 12 and 13, you need to make alternate plans.

DB: TRADE/HOLD. Won’t return before Sydney’s bye with a stress related injury. He won’t lose money, so you can hold if you have other pressing issues.

TP: TRADE — Won’t play for a while so, if you can, upgrade him and keep a playing rookie as cover.

CHAD WARNER $322,000 FWD

AP: HOLD — I moved him on a couple of weeks ago so this is a bit hypocritical but he has a solid role, won’t lose much money and the ideal time to trade him is leading into Sydney’s Round 14 bye — if you can wait til then.

TM: TRADE/HOLD — No real urgency to move him on, especially considering the lack of quality forward premiums. If trading Warner helps you get to Dayne Zorko though, it’s a no-brainer.

DB: TRADE/HOLD. Has been one of the most consistent on-field rookie scorers this season so isn’t a must to trade, but his price is falling in small increments.

TP: TRADE/HOLD — Have no hesitation in turning him into Dayne Zorko, but with his break even remaining steady at 73, even if he can’t break the 60-point cycle, Warner may only lose another $5k in Round 10.

Toby Greene played on after fracturing his shoulder against Richmond.
Toby Greene played on after fracturing his shoulder against Richmond.

TOBY GREENE $463,100 FWD

AP: TRADE — The forward line injury curse strikes again. Dusty, Zorko or Greene are all good replacement options.

TM: TRADE — Sounds like he’s going to miss a month and that’s too long to stash a player worth more than $450,000 on your bench.

DB: TRADE — Set to miss four games with injury so you are best to turn him into another premium.

TP: HOLD — The club says he’ll miss four weeks but, given that will include GWS’s Round 12 bye, that might mean he’s only out for three matches. I’d hold and keep your upgrade momentum going.

ROWAN MARSHALL $497,300 FWD/RUC

AP: TRADE — The curse is real!

TM: TRADE — See the above verdict on Greene.

DB: TRADE — Will miss at least at least a month after another foot concern.

TP: TRADE — I don’t mind the idea of holding Greene but I’m more concerned about Marshall’s foot, after the Saints decided to send him in for surgery.

TAYLOR WALKER $419,200 FWD

AP: TRADE — If you held on while he was rested he will be back and refreshed this week but I can’t see him holding his spot as the third top-scoring forward.

TM: TRADE — The Crows have Melbourne and Richmond in the next two weeks. Hard to see him racking up big scores in either game which will mean his value drops below $400,000.

DB: HOLD — If you have held him through his week’s rest, you are best to keep him. Faces Collingwood after tough matches against Melbourne and Richmond.

TP: TRADE/HOLD — You were probably happy he was rested last week and his price didn’t change. But it is set to plummet when he returns. I still like the idea of upgrading your rookies around him, but there’s still time to make money by trading him.

Bulldog Anthony Scott has played every game this year.
Bulldog Anthony Scott has played every game this year.

ANTHONY SCOTT $286,400 FWD/MID

AP: TRADE — I like his dual-position flexibility but he’s just about as expensive as he’s going to get and I’m keen to move him on before the Dogs’ Round 13 bye.

TM: TRADE — Doing enough to fill your last spot on midfield or the forward line, for now. Definitely one who can be culled in the next two or three weeks, though.

DB: HOLD — With a break even of 29, it is worth giving Scott another week to see if he can rise above $300k, or produce another 80-plus total to keep the cash rolling in.

TP: HOLD — If he’s your way to a Zorko or Dusty, I’d consider it, but the mature-age recruit still has a bit of money to make.

BRAEDEN CAMPBELL $235,800 FWD/MID

AP: TRADE — He seems to show up on this list every week, surprised anyone still has him.

TM: TRADE — Like Gulden, he’s been ruled out until after the byes.

DB: TRADE — Like Gulden, Campbell will be sidelined with a stress-related injury and is not expected back until after Sydney’s Round 14 bye.

TP: TRADE — Like Gulden, if you can upgrade him instead of playing rookie, do it.

JACOB KOSCHITZKE $280,400 DEF

AP: TRADE — Ready to trade out whenever it suits, really. Won’t gain much more value but shouldn’t lose too much, either. Wait until Lachie Jones returns and make the swap.

TM: TRADE/HOLD — Assuming Tom Highmore is your other bench defender, I’d be happy to trade Koschitzke if Highmore holds his spot. If he doesn’t, then I’d be inclined to hold Koschitzke in case a defensive premium misses a week.

DB: TRADE — Looked to be on track for a ton against North Melbourne after two early goals but faded from thereon. Might be best to cash him in this week to avoid a potential stinker.

TP: HOLD/TRADE — Could still make more cash with Carlton and Gold Coast up next but he’s the man to make way for Lachie Jones if the Power bubble boy is picked.

Hawks forward Jacob Koschitzke faces the Blues this week.
Hawks forward Jacob Koschitzke faces the Blues this week.

JACK BOWES $466,300 DEF

AP: TRADE — Expected to miss three weeks with a hamstring injury. If you’re running low on trades you could try to hold but that relies on having good bench cover in defence — uh, oh.

TM: TRADE — The bubble has burst on this one.

DB: TRADE/HOLD — Should only miss two games with Gold Coast’s Round 12 bye, so there is no harm in holding if you are short on trades. However, his shift into the midfield from his lucrative defensive distributor role against Brisbane — before suffering his hamstring injury — is a cause for concern.

TP: HOLD/TRADE — If you’re backing him in to be a top-eight defender, I’d hold.

MOST TRADED IN

RILEY COLLIER-DAWKINS $182,500 MID

AP: PASS — Loved his game last week and the lack of downgrade options make him an option but I don’t like paying $180k for a rookie. Tigers midfield stars aren’t too far away, either.

TM: BUY — He showed last round he can justify the high price tag and will get a good run in the engine room until at least the Round 13 bye.

DB: CONSIDER — One of the best downgrade option available but it is worth noting that Shai Bolton, Trent Cotchin and Shane Edwards could all be back in the fold next week, which may make him vulnerable.

TP: BUY/PASS — Not a must at the elevated price but still worth jumping on if you need the cash and Lachie Jones doesn’t play.

DUSTIN MARTIN $425,500 FWD/MID

AP: BUY, BUY, BUY — If you don’t have Dusty you’re getting a huge bargain on the rest of us.

TM: BUY — Well done on holding out this long and not being tempted by his early-season dominance. It’s the perfect week to jump on.

DB: BUY — Without his injury affected score, Dusty is averaging 104 points this season. Doesn’t mind playing at the Gabba, either.

TP: BUY — He was back to his best last week and he’s a great buy at $425k. But he’s still going to be great value next week, so I’d consider Zorko first.

Dustin Martin turned it on when the Tigers needed him most.
Dustin Martin turned it on when the Tigers needed him most.

DAYNE ZORKO $511,100 FWD/MID

AP: BUY — Zorko was my Josh Dunkley replacement a few weeks ago and it’s one move I got right. In an uncertain forward pool he’s one player we can rely on. And he’s $15k under his starting price.

TM: BUY — If anyone is going to catch Jack Ziebell and finish as the top forward of 2021, it’s Zorko. Six tons in nine games and only two scores of less than 92.

DB: BUY — Abundantly clear now that Zorko will be entrenched in the top six forwards and if you can bring him before Lachie Neale returns, even better.

TP: BUY — Despite his consistency since Round 3, there’s still likely to be another low score. But he’s a top-six lock.

ISAAC HEENEY $342,100 FWD

AP: PASS — I can definitely understand the temptation but it’s too risky for me given John Longmire says his fitness is a “week to week” proposition and the fact he has to kick bags of goals to score big.

TM: PASS — Unless you have 20 or more trades left. The injury risk is just too high. Even the Swans conceded this week he’s still being managed after a serious ankle injury last year.

DB: WAIT — His score of 19 remains in his rolling average, so you can afford to do your due diligence this weekend before potentially trading him in next week at a similar price.

TP: PASS — “It’s only one game back. That’s the thing, it changes from week to week.” Those were John Longmire’s comments around Isaac Heeney and his sore ankle that he had surgery on last year. I’m not going there ... yet.

Can we trust Isaac Heeney’s fragile body?
Can we trust Isaac Heeney’s fragile body?

JORDAN RIDLEY $481,400 DEF

AP: PASS — A good price but he wouldn’t be my top priority. Break even of 98 means he will still be affordable next week.

TM: PASS — A three-round average of 92 isn’t reason enough to jump on. As long as Mason Redman is the main man on kick-outs, I would look elsewhere.

DB: WAIT — Bounced back with a ton but Mason Redman still seems to be taking over his kick-ins.

TP: PASS/WAIT — His scoring isn’t what it was in the opening month — and the rise of his teammates in defence looks to be hurting him — but there’s no denying his value at $488k. A 98-point break even means you can wait, though.

RONIN O’CONNOR $123,900 MID

AP: PASS — At this stage of the year it’s vital to pick up rookies who will play especially over the byes. One game for a score of 47 doesn’t fill me with confidence.

TM: PASS — Don’t force a rookie trade. His time on ground was about 50 per cent on debut and that’s going to make it hard for him to generate much cash.

DB: PASS — Could have posted a very low score if he didn’t lay eight tackles. Don’t look to trade him in unless we see a promising score from the midfielder this weekend.

TP: WAIT — A game-high eight tackles was impressive, but not just yet.

Jack Steele is $88,000 cheaper than he was in Round 1. Picture: Michael Klein
Jack Steele is $88,000 cheaper than he was in Round 1. Picture: Michael Klein

JACK STEELE $569,200 MID

AP: BUY — if you can afford him. Hasn’t scored above 116 since Round 4 but his lowest for the season is 91. Great price for a top-eight midfielder.

TM: BUY — The best buy of Round 10 if you have the cash spare. How often does a top-10 overall points scorer become available for this price?

DB: BUY — If your Round 14 bye situation is looking OK, Steele is a high quality trade-in at that price.

TP: BUY — If it doesn’t ruin you in Round 14, he’s a - don’t do it - Steele.

CALEB POULTER $174,100 FWD/MID

AP: PASS — See my logic on Collier-Dawkins. If you had to take a rookie a week late I would prefer Ryan Byrnes at $159k — if he keeps his spot in the St Kilda team.

TM: PASS — You missed the boat here.

DB: BUY — Prefer bringing in Poulter a week late over RCD. The Pies should stick with him as one of their best performing draftees.

TP: BUY/PASS — If you went RCD last week instead, there’s merit in considering Poulter ahead of Round 10 if you need the cash.

Cody Weightman starred in his first game for the year. Picture: Michael Klein
Cody Weightman starred in his first game for the year. Picture: Michael Klein

CODY WEIGHTMAN $173,700 FWD

AP: PASS — Too much to pay for a small forward. Kicked 3.2 and still only scored 75.

TM: PASS — Looked lively against Port Adelaide but I wouldn’t be desperate to jump on at that price after one game.

DB: PASS — Has talent, but his job security appears to be very shaky and is at a high asking price for a small forward. Another impressive performance may change this verdict next week.

TP: WAIT — Give him another week.

CAM GUTHRIE $617,200 MID

AP: PASS — Can’t argue with his numbers but wait until after the Cats’ Round 12 bye then bring him in.

TM: PASS — Has the bye in two weeks and there’s options who can score just as well for much cheaper. Make him a Round 13 target instead.

DB: BUY — I was one of those that doubted whether Guthrie could keep this up. Even when Patrick Dangerfield returns, I’d expect the red-hot Cat to maintain the rage.

TP: BUY — Rammed home again in Round 9 that he’s the real deal in KFC SuperCoach.
