It was only a brief taste, but footy returned at the weekend as we got our first look at what shortened quarters would mean for KFC SuperCoach.

For some big guns, such as Brodie Grundy (179), little changed.

But there were plenty of premiums who failed to hit the heights they have in previous years, while mid-pricers such as Jack Viney (186), Chad Wingard (131) and Hugh Greenwood (116) shone.

Who were the stars for your team? Check out every Round 1 score below.

HITS: At $439,300, will Jack Viney be the ultimate mid-pricer of 2020? The ex-Demons skipper could not have made a better start after being relegated from the top job, amassing 34 disposals and booting a goal against the Eagles. Shannon Hurn (152) was his ever-reliable self for West Coast.

MISSES: Not the start those who started Tom McDonald (40) as a POD (point-of-difference) pick were hoping for. He kicked two goals but only had seven disposals to finish with 40 points.

Tom Mitchell returned in brilliant touch, racking up 25 disposals, while Lachie Neale had 26 possessions and kicked two goals. The Lions ball magnet had 70 KFC SuperCoach points at quarter-time.

MISSES: The rolling lockout can be a godsend in Round 1, but can also be a source of frustration. If you missed out on rookie midfielder Deven Robertson (47) when he was a late call-up for Grant Birchall, take solace that you’ll have enough trades to make a move when footy returns.

HITS: Ben Cunnington was one of the premier KFC SuperCoach midfielders in the first half of 2019 and started 2020 as North Melbourne’s matchwinner against St Kilda. The tough Roo had 25 possessions and kicked two goals. Todd Goldstein (136) was outstanding, while Jack Steele (128) showed signs he can become a KFC SuperCoach premium.

MISSES: Not the start those who started Tom McDonald (40) as a POD (point-of-difference) pick were hoping for. He kicked two goals but only had seven disposals to finish with 40 points.

HITS: On a weekend where ruckmen dominated, Sam Jacobs (134) was the best KFC SuperCoach scorer in his first outing as a Giant. Jacobs had 10 disposals and 28 hit outs. Eight Giants amassed tons, with new skipper Stephen Coniglio (114) a bargain starting pick at $549,500.

MISSES: It will be a tricky call for those who paid $245,000 for Isaac Cumming (57) on whether to hold when footy returns. Tom Green (41) might not be the money-making rookie we hoped for. Fingers crossed he doesn’t find himself in the NEAFL for the rest of 2020.

HITS: A brilliant start by forward mid-pricers Connor Rozee (125) and Hugh Greenwood (116), who were available for less than $500,000. No. 1 draft pick Matthew Rowell started slowly but lived up to his high price tag by finishing with 80 KFC SuperCoach points. $130k forward Mitch Georgiades’ debut (78) was also noteworthy.

MISSES: If you paid more than $200,000 for Noah Anderson, you might need to consider downgrading to another rookie ahead of Round 2. His job security is solid enough, but he’s unlikely to be a cash cow.

Crows star Rory Sloane loves starting the season hot and this match was no exception, topscoring for his side with 123 points.

Discount

It wasn’t such a great day for Brodie Smith, who suffered a chest injury and scored just 54 points, while Crows cash cows Ben Davis (51 points) Billy Frampton (46) were solid.

Premium defenders Jake Lloyd (77) and Rory Laird (88) were below par scorers for their high price.

Rookie Justin McInerney scored just nine points in the first quarter but lifted significantly to finish on 81 points, and Jordan Dawson (83 points) had a whopping 71-point second half.

The same can’t be said for

Hits: An old KFC SuperCoach favourite scored a mammoth total as the Swans snuck over the line in a nail-biter away from home. It took only 16 disposals for blond-bombshell Isaac Heeney to amass 152 SuperCoach points, booting four goals and having an impact late behind the ball. Max Gawn alternative Sam Naismith scored a formidable total of 121 up against Reilly O’Brien, with his $251,500 price set to soar.

Misses: Crows debutant Fischer McAsey could only manage 16 points and it’s likely his price will drop after he plays his second game.

Hits: Those who had faith in mid-price midfielder Andy McGrath and fallen premo forward Devon Smith would be very happy with their output. If you had faith in Dockers debutant Sam Sturt, you would have been very happy — he booted three goals on his way to 100 KFC SuperCoach points.

Misses: Will Brandon Zerk-Thatcher (49) hold his spot when footy returns? Patrick Ambrose should return from a PCL injury and Cale Hooker will also be back. That could be a worry for thousands who picked BZT after an impressive pre-season.

Hits: Who had the captaincy on Brodie Grundy? The topscoring KFC SuperCoach player of the past two years will be hard to beat again in 2020 if his opening round performance is anything to go by, racking up a massive 179 points in another thrashing of young Dog Tim English.

Misses: Just three Dogs topped the ton with Jack Macrae (103) the best of the Dogs’ big three midfielders. Marcus Bontempelli (76) couldn’t get into the game and Josh Dunkley was a Round 1 flop, scoring just 67. But it could have been worse — he was in negative points late in the first quarter.

Hits: Grand Final hero Marlion Pickett delivered on the cheapie hype, his 94 pleasing pretty much every SuperCoach. At $123k, he’s going to make plenty of dough in this shortened season.

Misses: Not the start those who took a risk with Tom Lynch (55) would have predicted. But, such is the life of a key forward in KFC SuperCoach, he could return with a flourish in a few months’ time.
