AFL 2024: Live updates, SuperCoach scores for Super Sunday of round 8

Looking for a POD? Brisbane’s midfield stars destroyed the Suns young guns, and have we finally found a forward premium? Recap all the action here.

Brisbane is king of Queensland after dominating Gold Coast to win the QClash and resurrect its season.

But the victory came at a cost with Lincoln McCarthy and Darcy Gardiner suffering knee injuries.

The Lions also lost Brandon Starcevich (calf) and Noah Answerth (concussion) early in the game.

Follow live stats and SuperCoach scores in the match centre above.

Earlier, Hawthorn won a thriller against the Western Bulldogs and Fremantle kicked away in the final term to record a comfortable win over Richmond.

Here are three SuperCoach takeaways from Super Sunday.

Ryan king of the backline

Luke Ryan posted the highest SuperCoach score of the season – 197 points – after an absolute masterclass in defence for Fremantle. He took nine kick-ins (playing on from every one) and had another 31 disposals for a total of 39 against the Tigers at 87 per cent efficiency, plus 15 marks and nine intercepts. Ryan entered the game with a Break Even of 167 but his price will only go up after that performance.

Lions midfield goes bang bang bang

Most SuperCoaches avoided Brisbane players this season due to their early bye (round 2). That may have been a mistake. Gold Coast’s young midfield guns were absolutely smashed in the QClash, with Lachie Neale (34), Josh Dunkley (27) and Dayne Zorko (39) ammassing 100 disposals between them and all scoring above 160 SuperCoach points. Neale is in just 3 per cent of teams, Dunkley is in 4 per cent and Zorko is in 7 per cent.

Is that a forward premo?

Dylan Moore posted his second 130-plus score in as many weeks to put his hand up as a long-lost forward premium scorer this season. Splitting his time between the forward line and midfield, Moore had 24 touches and a goal to help the Hawks to an upset win. His price will shoot up after this performance but he’s a player we should have on our watch list.

9:45pm: Lions are home

After losses to Collingwood, Carlton and Geelong, Brisbane has its first home win of the season.

This was a very disappointing night for Gold Coast, which had a chance to jump into the top eight but was never in the contest despite a string of injuries to the Lions.

Brisbane’s midfielders gave their Suns counterparts an absolute belting, with Lachie Neale, Josh Dunkley and Dayne Zorko all scoring over 150 SuperCoach points.

att Rowell had five kicks and 61 points.

9:33pm: Is there time?

Ben Ainsworth cuts the marghin to 23 points with 10 minutes to play.

But despite Brisbane being severely undermanned Gold Coast is struggling to find any spark.

It’s been a rough night for SuperCoach bubble boy Jake Rogers. Lasr week he had 22 disposals and 98 SuperCoach points. So far tonight he has four touches and 21 points.

9:15pm: Three quarter-time SuperCoach leaders

The Lions leave the door ajar with a 0.9 quarter, and they have just one fit player on the bench. But it’s been all Brisbane so far, can the Suns find something late?

8:42pm: Suns sub on, Dimma swings magnets

Damien Hardwick hasn’t waited long after halftime to sub out young tall Ethan Read and bring Ben Long into the game.

He has gone to half-back and Sam flanders has been moved forward for the second half.

That could spell SuperCoach disaster – he is the Suns’ leading ball-winner with 20 disposals and their leading SuperCoach scorer (76).

8:25pm: Halftime SuperCoach leaders

Complete domination by the Brisbane midfield. Lachie Neale is going to the moon while the No.1 scorer in the game this year, Matt Rowell, has 32 points from 10 touches and one tackle in the first half.

8:08pm: Lions midfield domination

Amid the carnage Brisbane’s A-grade midfielders are running riot.

Lachie Neale and Josh Dunkley both have over 70 SuperCoach points midway through the second term and Hugh McCluggage has 60 of his own.

Touk Miller is the best of the Suns mids with 38.

Gold Coast’s pressure rating is 160, which Fox Footy commentator Gerard Healy described as “kimdergarten stuff”.

7:57pm: Lions injury disaster: Gardiner in agony

The Gabba is silent as Darcy Gardiner clutches his knee following a marking contest on the wing.

He’s now leaving the field with the help of trainers.

To recap a nightmare night for the Lions:

Brandon Starcevich injured his calf in the warm-up and pulled out of the game. He was replaced by first-gamer Logan Morris who became the sub after playing in the VFL earlier in the day,.

Lincoln McCarthy hurt his knee in the opening minutes of the game. He was subbed out and replaced by Morris.

Noah Answerth copped an accidental knee in the head from Jed Walter and failed a concussion test. That was all before quarter-time.

Two minutes into the second term Gardiner went down with what also looks like a bad knee injury.

If he doesn’t come back on the Lions are down to two men on the bench.

7:50pm: Quarter-time SuperCoach scores

The Lions are playing hurt but they are in control on the scoreboard with five goals to two.

Josh Dunkley and Lachie Neale are doing all the damage in the engine room.

Sam Clohesy has -4 points at quarter-time.

7:40pm: Another Lion down

Noah Answerth is off the ground after crashing hard in a marking contest. He has failed his HIA and been ruled out of the match.

The Lions have already activated their sub after Lincoln McCarthy suffered what looked like a serious knee injury.

7:35pm: Lions get the jump

Late late inclusion Logan Morris just misses the chance for a fairytale goal but Brisbane is dominating early.

The Lions midfield is well on top – Lachie Neale has nine disposals and Josh Dunkley, Dayne Zorko and Hugh McCluggage six each.

Sam Flanders (eight) and Touk Miller (six) are flying the flag for the Suns.

Popular Gold Coast SuperCoach rookies Sam Clohesy and Will Graham have two touches each. Clohesy has also given away a 50m penalty to have -5 SuperCoach points – not ideal!

7:22pm: Lion injury blow, sub’s big day

Lincoln McCarthy appears set to be subbed out of the game with a knee injury in a huge blow for the Lions in the opening minutes.

Logan Morris has taken the tracksuit top off and is ready to enter the game.

The Lions youngster played in the VFL earlier today, winning 13 disposals, and came into this one at the last moment after Brandon Starcevich hurt his calf in the warm-up.

Morris was still getting changed in the rooms when the game started, now he’s about to play his second game for the day.

7:11pm: QClash is go

After another moving tribute to victims of domestic violence the final game of the round is underway at the Gabba.

Brisbane swung a late late change with Logan Morris in to replace Brandon Starcevich, who pulled out at the last moment with a calf injury.

Josh Dunkley and Matt Rowell are going head to head in the centre square. Good luck getting between those two.

6:52pm: Sicily sorry for hilarious tantrum

James Sicily had a remarkable day and just apologised to first-year teammate Nick Watson after throwing a mini tantrum late in the game.

After being shifted forward in a matchwinning move, Sicily won the ball and gave it off to the youngster for what should have been an easy goal.

But Watson blew his lines and Sicily didn’t do a great job of hiding his frustration.

He told Fox Footy after the siren that he had apologised to Watson for the outburst.

6:45pm: HAWKS WIN

A set shot will haunt Jamarra Ugle-Hagan – he had the opportunity to tie the scores but his shot from 50m hit the behind post.

James Sicily scraps a behind with the last kick of the game and the Hawks are home by seven points.

6:40pm: Dogs still alive!

Marcus Bontempelli hits a free Bailey Williams with a bullet pass and he slots the goal – six points in it with 2:16 to play.

6:37pm: Sicily strikes!

James Sicily has been through the wars today but he could be the unlikely hero for the Hawks.

Sam Mitchell has thrown him forward and he outmarks Buku Khamis and snaps the goal to give the Hawks a two-goal lead.

6:34pm: Why is Bont on the bench?

The game is going down to the wire and Marcus Bontempelli has been stuck on the bench for six minutes. Find a way to get the champ on, Bevo!

UPDATE: He’s back! Five minutes left, Hawks by six points.

6:30pm: QClash teams are in

There are no late changes for the final game of the round with the late 7.10pm (AEST) start time.

Harry Sharp will be Brisbane’s sub and Ben Long will start as sub for Gold Coast.

Stay tuned here for all the action!

Meanwhile, there are five points in it at Marvel Stadium with nine minutes to play.

6:20pm: Oh, Dear!

Hawks father-son Calsher Dear kicks his second goal and Hawthorn has wrestled back control. Dear has 58 SuperCoach points on debut.

What have the Dogs got?

6:10pm: Is Libba in hot water?

Tom Liberatore gave away a free kick for this brutal tackle on Will Day.

Will it attract attention from the Match Review Officer?

6:05pm: Three quarter-time SuperCoach scores

There are eight points in it with a quarter to go, so lots of points still to allocate to players who stand up when the game is on the line – more often than not that is Marcus Bontempelli, so he’s a huge watch this quarter!

Sam Darcy (32 points) and Massimo D’Ambrosio (49) started to lift towards three-quarter time.

5:50: Sicily hurt again

James Sicily ahs copped everything today. He was off the field early with a dislocated shoulder but returned to the action, now he is off limping on the boundary line.

Trainers are working on his left ankle.

5:46pm: Subs activated

Welcome the Wizard. Nick Watson is into the game, replacing Cam Mackenzie (tactical).

Minutes later the Bulldogs sub out debutant Charlie Clarke. Oskar Baker is on as Marcus Bontempelli kicks a captain’s goal to cut the margin to 15 points.

5:45pm: Meek going massive

More than 1400 SuperCoaches traded out Lloyd Meek this week to get must-have ruckman Jordon Sweet into their teams.

They would not want to look at the SuperCoach scores from this game, with Meek leading all scorers on the ground with 94 points halftway through the third quarter.

Bailey Dale is also into the 90s for the Dogs but the alarm bells are sounding for Sam Darcy (14 points), Riley Garcia (21) and Massimo D’Ambrosio (27).

4:58pm: Hawks extend lead

The margin is now 15 points with Jack Gunston kicking his second of the game. Jai Newcombe has been one of the leading players getting the Hawks into the contest. He has six disposals in the first half of this quarter and is currently on 55 points.

4:52pm: Danger signs for Bulldogs

This is starting to become a worry for the Bulldogs. Hawks lead by seven points after Connor Macdonald kicks his first goal of the game. Hawthorn has kicked six of the last eight goals.

4:50pm: Hawks on top right now

Hawthorn takes back the lead and after a slow start is getting right into the contest. The team has more contested possessions and more disposals. The Bulldogs though are still leading the clearances.

4:44pm: SuperCoach analysis

Lloyd Meek is the leading player on the ground after the Hawks ruckman kicked a goal, had 10 hitouts and got seven disposals. He is ahead of Bailey Dale (39) and Marcus Bontempelli (37) who had strong first quarters. Blake Hardwick is the next best for Hawthorn with 36. Karl Amon (7), Ed Richards (6), Massimo D’Ambrosio (10) and Jack Macrae (15) have had slow starts in the game.

4:36pm: Quarter time scores

Western Bulldogs forward Aaron Naughton kicks a goal right on the quarter time siren and the Bulldogs get back the lead. The Dogs lead by five points. Score: 5.1.(31) to 4.2.(26).

4:34pm: Good news on Sicily front

The shoulder has popped back in for the Hawks captain and he looks likely to get back out and play. Meanwhile, the Hawks have now kicked to the lead after kicking four of the last five goals.

4:32pm: Dear has his first goal

It’s been a good first term for Calsher and now he has his first goal in footy. He marks 10 metres out and snaps his first in the competition and grabs his jumper. His family and teammates celebrate the milestone.

4:26pm: Sicily injury concern

James Sicily is running off the ground with a bad shoulder injury. The Hawks captain landed awkwardly on his shoulder on the ground after being involved in a marking contest. He has gone down into the rooms and the sub is warming up.

4:20pm: SuperCoach scores early

Bailey Dale and Marcus Bontempelli are on fire early, scoring 31 and 30 points respectively to lead overall in the contest. Connor Nash leads the Hawks players with 26 points. He has had six disposals in the match.

Western Bulldogs kicked the first three goals of the game before Hawthorn bounced back. Jack Gunston kicks the first seven points of the game for the Hawks, with a goal and a behind, to get the team back into the contest.

4:06pm: Hot start for the Dogs

The game is underway and in a minute and 15 seconds of game time, the Bulldogs have kicked two goals.

The Western Bulldogs win two centre clearances and kick two goals from them. The first to Laitham Vandermeer with the second to ruckman Tim English. Major warning signs early for the Hawks.

3:58pm: Past five matches

Hawthorn won the last contest between the two teams in Tasmania last year but the Western Bulldogs have won three of the past five clashes. At Marvel Stadium, the Western Bulldogs have won the past two.

3:54pm: Beautiful moment for Dear family

There was a beautiful moment ahead of the Bulldogs and Hawks game with Calsher Dear presented with his guernsey ahead of his debut. Dear is the son of former Hawk and Norm Smith Medallist Paul Dear, who died in 2022 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. The charity Dare to Hope, which raises funds for the disease, was created in his honour. I’m sure somewhere above there will be a very proud father looking over his son, as he plays in the brown and gold.

3:50pm: Subs finalised for next match

The Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn have finalised their subs for the clash at Marvel Stadium. Oskar Baker is the sub for the Dogs with Nick Watson the sub for Hawthorn.

3:40pm: SuperCoach analysis

Luke Ryan has had the biggest game this year in SuperCoach, scoring 197 points. He fell three shorts of joining the 200-point club. He had 39 disposals, 15 marks and two tackles. A dominant game. It was another strong game for Caleb Serong and Hayden Young who scores 137 and 131 respectively. Jayden Short was the best Tiger with 115. The three goals in the final term for Josh Treacy moved him to 102 with Dustin Martin, despite a strong game, not able to get to 100 with 86 points. Shai Bolton was able to score 36 points after only having four at half time with Maurice Rioli getting to 25 after being on -4. Nat Fyfe, after coming on as the sub, only scored 17. His score would frustrate SuperCoaches who would not have expected him to start as the sub.

3:30pm: Fremantle secures a large win

Fremantle kicked away with the contest in the final term to come away with a comfortable win over Richmond. The Dockers kicked seven goals to two in the final term to win by 54 points. Score: 15.13. (103) to 6.13. (49).

3:27pm: One minute to go

Luke Ryan is now on 196 with just one minute of the game to go. Does he have enough time?

3:23pm: Two minute warning

Luke Ryan just needs nine points now. He’s on 191 with a couple of minutes to go.

3:20pm: Ryan on track for 200

There are five minutes left in the game and Fremantle’s Luke Ryan is on 184. He already has the highest score of the season. Can he crack the milestone?

3:10pm: Treacy on fire in final term

Josh Treacy has helped Fremantle wrap up the game. He kicks his third for the quarter, and fourth for the game, and Fremantle leads by 37 points. Treacy has his goals in the first 10 minutes of play in the final term.

3:07pm: Ryan watch

A quarter of the way through the final term and Luke Ryan is on 157 points. He has 10 in the quarter.

3:04pm: Fremantle kicks on in final term

Any chance Richmond had of winning the game has been nullified early by Fremantle. Two goals to Josh Treacy extends the margin to 37 points with 16 minutes left of the game.

3:00pm: 200 points is still on

Luke Ryan just needs 53 points to get 200 for the game. He’s on track for the milestone after scoring 38 points to get on 147 at the final change. Can he do it?

2:53pm: ¾ time statistics

Goalscorers: Fremantle – S. Darcy 2, J. Amiss, M. Frederick, M. Johnson, J. Sharp, M. Walters, J. Treacy. Richmond – M. Lefau 2, H. Ralphsmith, T. Sonsie.

Disposals: Fremantle – C. Serong 29, L. Ryan 28, H. Young 25, A. Brayshaw 22, J. Clark 20, M Johnson 18. Richmond – J. Short 24, N. Vlastuin 20, D. Martin 19, D. Rioli 16, L. Baker 15.

2:52pm: Three quarter time

Richmond fought back in the third term, kicking three of the last four goals in the quarter to reduce the margin to 23 points at the final break. Fremantle is on top but the Tigers are still in the contest. Scores: 8.11. (59) to 4.11. (35).

2:48pm: Sub made for Tigers

Kamdyn McIntosh is on for the Tigers as the sub. He has replaced ruckman Sam Naismith who has been subbed out. There doesn’t look to be any injury concerns, it’s been done purely as a tactical play.

2:46pm: Dockers settle against Tigers

Fremantle kicks a settling goal to extend the margin to 24. There’s three minutes left of the third term. If Richmond can kick a goal, there is still plenty to play out in the contest.

2:42pm: Sub made for Fremantle

Nat Fyfe is on for Fremantle with Sean Darcy taking the vest. He has calf tightness and has been taken off as a precaution. This could be good for SuperCoaches with Luke Jackson. He is expected to now go into the ruck for the remainder of the contest.

2:39pm: Ryan update

Dockers defender Liam Ryan is up to 124 points in SuperCoach. He’s slowed down a little bit on his pace from the first two terms, but he’s added 16 points since half time.

2:37pm: Game on again

Richmond has kicked three goals in a row and the margin in back down to 19. The Tigers leaders, Liam Baker and Dustin Martin, have dragged the team back into the contest. There is fight in the Tigers, which is great to see.

2:30pm: Tigers respond

Hugo RalphSmith kicks his first goal for the afternoon after taking a strong leaping mark inside 50. A much needed goal for Richmond and the margin is 31. Dustin Martin is having his best game of the year and is keeping Richmond in the hunt.

2:27pm: Game could be over

Michael Frederick snaps his first goal of the game and Fremantle leads by 37 points. It’s going to be very tough for Richmond to come back from here.

2:15pm: Ryan the best at main break

In two of the first seven rounds this season, a Docker has been the leader in points for the round. Caleb Serong was the best in round one with Luke Jackson the best in round two. Luke Ryan is on track to be the third. He has 108 points to half time and is on track to score 200 points this game. The best this season was Jackson in round two with 178. Ryan has 18 disposals, seven marks and two tackles in the first half. Caleb Serong has also had a good half with 79 points. Eight of the top-10 players in SuperCoach are from Fremantle with Jayden Short (67) and Dustin Martin (53) the best for Richmond. It’s been a poor half for Shai Bolton and Maurice Rioli with both on 4 and -2 respectively.

2:09pm: How the 50m penalty happened

Fremantle won the 50m penalty after Thomson Dow dropped the ball after Sean Darcy won a free kick for Fremantle following a ruck infringement against Toby Nankervis. It was a 50m penalty and the Dockers ruckman kicked the goal to punish the team.

2:05pm: Dockers well on top

Richmond concedes a free kick, and a 50-metre penalty, right on half time and Sean Darcy kicks his second goal of the game to give Fremantle a 31-point lead at the main break. Freo kicked three goals to zero in that term to blow the game wide open for them. Score: 6.8. (44) to 1.7. (13).

2:03pm: Ryan gets to 100

It’s only taken a half but Luke Ryan has already got to 100 points in SuperCoach. He is on his way to the biggest SuperCoach score for the year.

1:56pm: Dockers kick away

Jeremy Sharp kicks his first goal of the game and Fremantle leads by 25 points. This is starting to get ugly for Richmond.

1:52pm: Fremantle gets first goal

Josh Treacy breaks the drought in the second quarter and Fremantle leads by 18 points. Luke Ryan is absolutely on fire in SuperCoach and has risen to 90 points. There’s still plenty of time in the second term.

1:50pm: Goal drought in contest

More than half the term has gone and no team has kicked a goal in the quarter. Richmond is struggling to find a target inside their forward 50 with Fremantle missing two chances to kick goals.

1:38pm: SuperCoach analysis

Caleb Serong was strong late in the term and had 12 disposals and 39 SuperCoach points in the first quarter. But he wasn’t number one with Luke Ryan on top with 48 ahead of fellow defender Hayden Young. Dustin Martin was Richmond’s best in the first term and it showed in SuperCoach with 38 points. It was a good quarter for rookie Tyler Sonsie with 28 points. He only averages 37.5 this season in the couple of games he’s played. On the other end of the spectrum, it was a tough quarter for Luke Jackson with only 20 points while Shai Bolton is currently on -1 with Maurice Rioli on -2. Both have conceded free kicks.

1:33pm: Quarter time stats

Goals: Fremantle – J. Amiss, S. Darcy, M. Walters; Richmond – M. Lefau

Disposals: Fremantle – C. Serong 12, H. Young 12, L. Ryan 9, M. Johnson 7, J. Sharp 7; Richmond – D. Martin 10, J. Short 9, D. Rioli 6, L. Baker 5, M. Lefau 5.

1:30pm: Dockers lead at quarter time

Richmond kicked the first goal of the contest but after that it was one-way traffic with Fremantle getting on top. The Dockers lead by 13 points. Score: 3.4. (22) to 1.3. (9)

1:27pm: Dockers getting on top

Jye Amiss and Michael Walters kick their first goals of the game and Fremantle is starting to get on top against Richmond. The lead is 13 points. The clearances are starting to be a big worry for the Tigers, Fremantle leads 8-3 in the contest.

1:18pm: Defenders devastating early in SuperCoach

Fremantle’s defenders are all scoring well in SuperCoach. Hayden Young, Liam Ryan and Jordan Clark are all on more than 20, half way through the first term. Young is on 27 with Ryan and Clark on 21.

1.15pm: Tight tussle early

Richmond kicks the first goal of the game and have the momentum early but the Dockers are starting to get into the game. Sean Darcy kicks the Dockers first and scores are level. 1.1. (7) to 1.1. (7).

1:03pm: Game underway

Fremantle and Richmond has started at the MCG. This is a must-win for Fremantle in their quest for a top-eight spot. But Richmond will be a tough opponent, who have been competitive in every game this season.

12:50pm: Last few matches

Richmond has a great head to head record recently against Fremantle, winning five of the last seven with one match ending in a draw. In Melbourne, these two know how to produce a cracking contest. The last match, in 2022, at Marvel Stadium, was a draw. Two of the last three matches at the MCG have been decided by under a goal, with David Mundy kicking the matchwinning goal in those two contests.

Last five matches:

Richmond 12.13. (85) to Fremantle 10.10. (70) – R13, 2023

Richmond 7.10. (52) to Fremantle 7.10. (52) – R19, 2022

Fremantle 7.13. (55) to Richmond 6.15. (51) – R20, 2021

Richmond 8.8. (56) to Fremantle 4.5. (29) – R15, 2020

Richmond 17.9. (111) to 11.12. (86) – R8, 2019

12.30pm: Fyfe the sub

Fremantle has dealt a major blow to some SuperCoach coaches, putting Nat Fyfe as the sub for the clash against Richmond. He scored 119 points last week in his best game in years. The club says nothing is wrong with Fyfe, the Dockers have made the move to protect him and allow him to overcome the five day break coming up to face Sydney at home. Richmond has picked Kamdyn McIntosh as their sub. No late changes for each team ahead of the clash.

12.25pm: Welcome to the blog

Final teams are set to come in the next post.
