Brisbane will finish the night in fifth place after a stirring come-from-behind victory over Melbourne.

Both the Demons and Lions had their chances but it was ultimately Hugh McCluggage who took his chance when it mattered.

See our SuperCoach takeaways and relive the analysis below.

THE THREE TAKEAWAYS

DO WE GET HIM IN?Will Ashcroft made an unscathed return and had enough moments for SuperCoaches to think about this week.

Ashcroft, playing in his first game after an ACL injury, was having ‘an almost game’ up until the last quarter before he lifted immensely.

His 18 disposals grossed 79 SuperCoach points but very well could have been more if it wasn’t for two behinds.

Ashcroft is pricey at $472,300 but he is going to deliver in the Lions’ softer fortnight ahead.

DUNKLEY GOES BESERK

Josh Dunkley delivered for the Lions.

He got his hands dirty and was rewarded with a game-high 142 SuperCoach points.

The dynamic midfielder had just five disposals in the first quarter but finished with 32 disposals, 12 marks and 10 tackles.

Hawthorn champion Jason Dunstall said the Lions “needed someone to get tough and hard inside” when describing Dunkley’s team-lifting second half.

He surged beyond Kysaiah Pickett who led the SuperCoach rankings for most of the night.

THAT’S THE CLARRY WE KNOW

Over 13,000 SuperCoaches ran out of patience for Clayton Oliver potentially a week too early.

Oliver was the most-traded out player during the week but produced a vintage 101 SuperCoach points in a strong performance against the Lions.

It had the makings of being one of Oliver’s proper fill-ups when he had 25 points halfway through the first quarter.

We will monitor his trade movement this week but it might take another century for SuperCoaches to be able to trust the Melbourne on-baller again.

10:25: FT — LIONS STEAL VICTORY

Brisbane has stolen victory from the clutches of defeat to launch into the top eight for the first time this season.

Hugh McCluggage put the final dagger in after the Lions had wasted their opportunities all term.

McCluggage won an insufficient intent free kick and waved away Joe Daniher, who would have been on the wrong side for a left footer.

Interviewed post game by Channel 7s Abbey Holmes, McCluggage revealed he said “Joey, get out” when Daniher ran to take the kick.

The Demons had a chance late through Bayley Fritsch but he sprayed it across the face.

Josh Dunkley went nuclear while Kysaiah Pickett went quiet in the last term after a sizzling first three quarters.

10:21: BRISBANE WIN

Brisbane has won it from nowhere.

The Lions had kicked horribly all game but converted when it counted.

10:19: CLUG PUTS THE LIONS UP

Hugh McCluggage has put the Lions up by a goal with a minute left on the clock.

He won an insufficient intent free kick and kicked a slick goal from 40 out.

Melbourne has completely stopped.

10:17: IT COULDN’T BE, COULD IT?

Scores are level with one minute left.

This would be the fourth draw of the season.

10:15: THREE MINUTES, ONE POINT

Brisbane is within one point of the Dees.

The 2024 season is on the line for both sides.

The winner goes to fifth, the loser is out of the eight.

10:10: WHAT A TACKLE FROM VINEY

Jack Viney has stuck an amazing tackle.
Zac Bailey was open and looking to put the Lions another goal closer but Viney completed a perfect lunging tackle to earn a free kick.

Viney has been superb tonight with 24 disposals — 18 of them contested.

10:08: FINALLY!

Jarrod Berry has finally added a sprinkle of class in what has been a mess of a final term.

The Lions had kicked four straight behind and butchered two golden opportunities.

Berry took the ball on the run and speared it straight through the middle — the Lions are now within seven points with eight minutes left.

10:02: UNTIDY LIONS

If Brisbane is to lose this game, it will have its goal kicking to blame.

Melbourne has defended tremendously and forced the Lions to take either pressured shots on goal or from low-percentage spots, but with 8.18 during the last quarter, it could have been a very different scoreboard.

10:00: FIVE MINUTES GONE

Five minutes of play has passed in this quarter and neither side has hit the scoreboard.

The Lions still trail by 14 points, as the Dees have locked this game down well.

Josh Dunkley has a game-high 126 SuperCoach points.

9:47: 3QT — KOZZY HELPS DEES BUT LIONS HOLD MOMENTUM

Kysaiah Pickett’s fifth goal slowed down Brisbane’s momentum late in the term but the Lions certainly have a wind in their sails.

The Lions kicked three goals to two in that term to get back within 15 points.

It started in the middle, with Lachie Neale and Josh Dunkley lifting while negating Jack Viney and Clayton Oliver’s impact.

Brisbane has used its sub, adding Jaspa Fletcher for Logan Morris, while the Dees are still yet to add Kynan Brown.

A mouth-watering final stanza awaits.

9:41: LIONS CLOSE WITHIN 10

Brisbane is just two goals down now.

Cal Ah Chee kicked the latest, which has the Lions just 10 points in arrears of the Dees.

9:35: ANOTHER ONE

Brisbane has kicked another goal off the ground and it’s now back within 16 points.

The Dees had a chance to push the margin out to nearly five goals but Harrison Petty missed and allowed the Lions to transition capitalise.

Cam Rayner swooped on a loose ball with a flying right boot to put it through.

9:28: LIONS MAKE SUB

Brisbane has added the run of substitute of Jaspa Fletcher and the expense of forward Logan Morris.

Morris was having a difficult night in what has been a superb start to his career.

The Demons are yet to use substitute Kynan Brown.

9:22: JOE MAKES UP FOR IT

Joe Daniher has escaped one of the bloopers of the year with a finish you would expect to see in the Euros.

Steven May took a mark but it was paid as a block and Brisbane was out in front of the ball.

Daniher dropped a simple chest mark but to clean up his mess he soccered it off the ground from long range.

Brisbane is back within three goals and has started to match the Dees in the middle of the ground.

9:14: LIONS NEED MORE OUT OF NEALE

If Brisbane is to turn this game around, it will need more out of star midfielder Lachie Neale.

Neale has 10 disposals for 43 SuperCoach points to half time but his impact has been smothered.

He’s got the four clearances, but that number will need to be closer to 11 or 12 if the Lions are to surge into the eight tonight.

8:55: HT — DEES CAP OFF DOMINANCE

Melbourne, led by Kysaiah Pickett and Jack Viney, has given itself a chance to beat the in-form Brisbane on the road.

The Demons simply dominated that quarter, shooting off eight goals to Brisbane’s two.

It started at the source with Jack Viney and Clayton Oliver rinsing the Lions at stoppage.

Viney has 13 disposals with 11 of them contested and seven of them clearances.

Pickett has four goals while Jacob van Rooyen has kicked two.

Positively for Brisbane, it was completely outplayed that quarter and only trails by 23 points.

8:45: CLARRY!

Clayton Oliver has almost doubled his entire game SuperCoach tally from last week in a half of football.

Oliver has just kicked the Demons’ seventh goal on the bounce and has rocketed to 64 SuperCoach points.

The Lions are in disarray and the Dees are making the most of it.

8:38: PICKETT, VINEY PROVING A PROBLEM

Kysaiah Pickett and Jack Viney are opening Brisbane up.

The Dees have kicked five goals in a row and it’s come largely from Viney in the middle and Pickett inside 50.

Pickett has kicked three goals while Viney is bullying the Lions’ midfielders with 10 contested possessions with seven minutes left in the second quarter.

The Dees, who are always under the microscope for their conversion, have kicked five goals from their past seven entries inside 50.

8:35: LOHMANN CLEARED

Brisbane’s Kai Lohmann has passed the concussion test and is back out on the ground.

He was being assessed after he collided with Steven May in a marking contest.

Lohmann has got 28 SuperCoach points from his five disposals.

8:34: DEES HIT THE FRONT

Melbourne has kicked four goals to one to take the lead from Brisbane.

Jacob Van Rooyen has two and now Kysaiah Pickett and Bayley Fritsch have chimed in.

Van Rooyen has the most SuperCoach points on the ground.

8:27: ROO RISES DEES

Jacob van Rooyen has lifted the Demons with two second-quarter goals.

He leads the ground with SuperCoach points, with 62, and is keeping Melbourne within striking distance of Brisbane.

8:22: HORROR TURNOVER COSTS DEES

Melbourne has gifted Brisbane a response after it kicked the first goal of the quarter.

Steven May’s kick in, directed at Trent Rivers, showed too much to the Lions forward Cam Rayner.

Rayner spoiled it and Eric Hipwood cleaned up the rest.

Josh Dunkley is starting to lift, hurrying to 49 SuperCoach points.

8:19: LOHMANN BEING ASSESSED

Brisbane’s Kai Lohmann is undergoing a concussion test after he was collected in a marking contest.

Lohmann got up, took his kick and then followed it up with another possession in the next stoppage but, such was his impact with the ground, he is being checked.

8:12: QT — ZORKO, OLIVER START STRONG

Clayton Oliver and Dayne Zorko have made ominous starts with a big first term.

Oliver, who was traded out heavily this week, had 25 points halfway through the quarter and continued on to score 34.

Zorko, meanwhile, continued his sizzling year with another top term.

Charlie Cameron’s two goals have propelled him to second on the leaderboard while Will Ashcroft has wasted no time making an impact in his return game.

If it wasn’t for some untidy goal kicking, this game would be a good old fashioned SuperCoach fill up.

8:08: A SHOOTOUT SHORT OF AMMUNITION

There’s been plenty of shots, but there’s been just four goals.

Melbourne and Brisbane have already combined for 12 minor scores heading into quarter time.

Taking into account an out on the full, and Trent River’s goal that was retracted after he ran too far, there’s been no shortage of chances.

8:02: LACHIE NEEDS TO LIFT

Lachie Neale has made a slow start as a lot of SuperCoaches first-choice captain this week.

The two-time Brownlow Medallist has just 10 SuperCoach points with six minutes left in the first term.

Trent Rivers is winning the battle between the two thus far.

7:55: OLIVER STARTS HOT

Clayton Oliver has started red hot.

Oliver was most-traded out player this week by a whopping 13,593 SuperCoaches but he’s making each one of those question their decision with an ominous start.

He has 27 SuperCoach points — the second highest on the ground — with 10 minutes left in the first quarter.

7:50: ALMOST, WASH

Will Ashcroft almost made the perfect start to his return game.

Ashcroft won the footy and fired off a shot on goal but it slid left.

He received a large roar when he came onto the ground after starting on the bench and his first disposal was close to being another addition to his growing highlight reel.

7:45: MATCH-UPS LOCKED IN

Trent Rivers has gone to Lachie Neale while Jarrod Berry is running with Clayton Oliver.

The tag is well and truly back!

7:43: THERE’S NO SHORTAGE OF FEELING

Harrison Petty and Brisbane has another chapter.

Petty gave a 50-metre penalty away to allow the Lions to set up their first goal.

Cam Rayner took the mark and kicked the goal after Ryan Lester was taken forward by the umpire.

7:05: LIONS TO CONSIDER TAG

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan said the Lions would consider sending Jarrod Berry to Clayton Oliver in a negating role.

Berry shut down Western Bulldogs star Marcus Bontempelli a fortnight ago in one of the Lions’ wins of the season.

Oliver was closely followed by Roo Will Phillips last week and had no impact on the game.

Speaking to Fox Footy pre-game, Fagan referred to the Demons’ midfield as “exposed” without Christian Petracca.

6:55: DEBUTANT FOR DREAM ROLE

The SuperCoaches who traded in Andy Moniz Wakefield can breathe a sigh of relief with Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin revealing the debutant will play across half back.

Moniz Wakefield will be trusted to kick the ball across half back which is promising for the coaches who own him, particularly in the absence of Jake Bowey.

6:48: GOODWIN CHASES IDENTITY

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin said the Demons’ form has been a result of falling away from its “identity”.

Speaking to Fox Footy pre-game, Goodwin said Melbourne had lost its way.

“Clearly we’ve had to look at evolving our game,” he said.

“We probably went away from the identity in how we want to play ... we’re really trying to build that cohesion.”

6:44: FINAL TEAMS, LATE CHANGE FOR DEES

Melbourne has suffered a late change with Jake Bowey coming out through back soreness.

Kynan Brown gets his chance after being dropped this week and will be the Demons’ sub.

Jaspa Fletcher will be Brisbane’s sub tonight.
