Collingwood pulled off a stunning hit and run raid against the Dockers last week. Can they repeat it against a red-hot Carlton?
The Pies won despite losing key stats categories including having 23 fewer contested possessions and 13 fewer pre-clearance contested possessions.
But stats guru Daniel Hoyne says they did their homework on the Dockers.
Speaking on a new episode of Pure Footy, the weekly analysis show exclusive to heraldsun.com.au, Hoyne said Collingwood’s overall pressure was elite, but the heat was even higher when drilling down to pre-clearance stats before the ball has left the stoppage area.

“(Collingwood’s) pressure on Fremantle was extreme – to go at 272 (pressure rating) pre-clearance when the AFL average is about 250, is off the charts,” he said.
“Yes, the Dockers won a lot of those contested possessions pre-clearance, but they were dirty contested possessions.”
Fremantle won the ball from a stoppage 50 times but only turned that into a clearance 36 times, well below the AFL average. And Hoyne said that area of the game will be critical again in Sunday’s MCG blockbuster against the Blues.
“Collingwood’s pressure, to be able to deny them really clean exits from those possessions, was elite. What’s going to be interesting is can they back that up this week against Carlton?
“Collingwood for the year have applied the third-most pressure of any team in the competition. Carlton has received the least pressure of any team in the competition.
“That’s party because the way they play with a high marking game and also their ability to break tackles and get out of that pressure situation, so it’s really intriguing to see whether they can back up those numbers this week.”
Also on this week’s agenda, Brisbane’s freakish goalkicking accuracy, the one area the Bulldogs need to fix, why Richmond is becoming a serious threat and the AFL’s biggest barometers.
