Pure Footy – episode 5 2022

Geelong continues to confuse footy fans to start the 2022 season.

The Cats are 3-2 and produced a statement win in Round 4 against Brisbane.

However, the club’s other wins have come against Essendon and Collingwood, neither of who are expected to play finals.

After being overrun by Hawthorn on Easter Monday, the big question around the Cats is, where are things going wrong?

On this week’s episode of Pure Footy, Champion Data stats guru Daniel Hoyne and North Melbourne premiership player David King looked at the club’s biggest issue.

“We are looking at the post-clearance contested possession numbers,” Hoyne explained.

“They (Geelong) haven’t won it for four weeks in a row.

“They broke even against Sydney but then they’ve been belted against Collingwood, they lost it against Brisbane and they got absolutely destroyed against Hawthorn.

“That was the single reason why they lost the game in the last quarter. They got belted in the first quarter, they levelled it in quarters two and three and then they got destroyed in the last quarter.”

So where on the ground is the issue hurting Geelong the most?

Hoyne explained that it is in the back half where things are falling apart.

“The issue at the moment … Where on the ground is it happening?,” Hoyne added.

“It is happening in defensive 50. They’re 18th for post-clearance contested possessions in their defensive 50 on the ground.”

Also on this week’s episode, the guys spoke about the rise of Ben Keays, Bailey Smith’s ups and downs and plenty more.
