Shock blow: Carlton to be without captain Cripps for Pies clash

Carlton have been dealt a shock blow for their clash against Collingwood with co-captain Patrick Cripps being withdrawn due to injury.

Carlton co-captain Patrick Cripps will miss Sunday’s clash against Collingwood with “soreness” in a big blow for the Blues.

Cripps, who played through a back injury earlier in the season, had been named in the initial squad of 26 on Thursday night, but was on Friday withdrawn from the contest at the MCG.

It will be the first game Cripps has missed since Round 16, 2019.

The skipper has recorded the second-most disposals of any Carlton player this year behind Sam Walsh and leads the side for clearances, averaging 5.3 a game.

Forward Lachie Fogarty (managed) will also miss for Carlton, along with midfielder Will Setterfield (omitted).

Forwards Matthew Cotterell and Zac Fisher and come into the side, while key defender Liam Jones returns after missing last week’s loss to Geelong with a back injury.

Essendon will debut mid-season draftee Sam Durham in Sunday’s clash against North Melbourne, who is expected to play a role on a wing or across halfback.

Selected at pick 9 in the June rookie draft, the 20-year-old had been overlooked in successive drafts before impressing for Richmond’s VFL side in the first half of the year.

“He’s a really athletic, versatile player,” Essendon coach Ben Rutten said.

“He’s got great balance, uses the ball well, pressures the ball carrier well.

“He’s settled into our club beautifully. He’s still got a fair bit to learn from our club and the way we play, but he’s really embraced the club, settled in and mixing in with the boys really well.

“I think he’s going to be a long-term player for us and our footy club.”

Captain Dyson Heppell is also a confirmed starter for the Bombers after getting through training on Friday.

Heppell has missed last week’s win over Adelaide with a thumb injury.

Western Bulldogs forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan has retained his spot in the side despite the Bulldogs welcoming back fellow key forward Aaron Naughton for Saturday’s clash with the Gold Coast Suns.

Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said on Friday he had borrowed a line from his past as inspiration to keep last year’s No.1 draft pick in the line up.

“My old mentor and first coach John Northey said if you struggled in your first game to give you another one,” Beveridge said.

“This week also gives us an opportunity to see Brucey (Josh Bruce) and Naughts (Aaron Naughton) and Marra play with Tim (English) up forward and see how it looks.

“Marra will be better for the experience. There’s always a little bit of self doubt that you are on an edge in your first one.

“I’m sure he’ll be a little more settled, and hopefully he can get into the game early.”

Ugle-Hagan had logged just seven disposals and one mark in a scoreless debut against Sydney last weekend.

Meanwhile, Adelaide has made six changes for it’s clash with West Coast on Sunday, welcoming back forwards Taylor Walker, Tom Lynch, Elliott Himmelberg and Darcy Fogarty along with defender Andrew McPherson.

Rising Star nominee Lachie Scholl has been omitted, with No.2 draft pick Riley Thilthorpe managed.
