AFL Round 5 teams news: Collingwood names Jack Ginnivan in squad as injuries hit stars

Collingwood has named Jack Ginnivan for his first senior game since his drugs ban, while the Giants have pulled the trigger on the No.1 pick. Check out all the ins and outs.

Pure Footy – episode 4 2023

Collingwood livewire Jack Ginnivan’s exile is over with the forward locked in to play against an unbeaten St Kilda at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.

Ginnivan, 20, has not played at AFL level since last year’s preliminary final after being suspended for the first two games this year due to admitting to taking an illicit drug during pre-season.

But Ginnivan will light up a front half alongside fellow smalls Bobby Hill and Beau McCreery on Sunday after recording strong GPS numbers in the VFL last week.

The small forward has kicked three goals and averaged 12 disposals and five score involvements in his two reserves matches for the Magpies since his ban ended.

“I did notice him walking up and down my hallway a couple more times than he normally does looking to see where he’s at,” coach Craig McRae said.

McRae announced to players before training at West Adelaide that Ginnivan was back in what will be his first game under new captain Darcy Moore, who has been a strong mentor for Ginnivan.

Ginnivan slotted 40 goals last year and suddenly he is on track to play in next week’s Anzac Day clash as well as the reigning Anzac Day Medallist.

While there will be room for Ginnivan, Hill and McReery in the same forward line, there was a doubt over Will Hoskin-Elliott.

“Will has been sick this week. He is going to fly tomorrow. We are anticipating that he is going to be right,” McRae said.

Nathan Kreuger will make his return in the VFL on Sunday as the Magpies desperately search for ruck cover without Darcy Cameron, Mason Cox and Aiden Begg.

Greater Western Sydney has pulled the trigger on No.1 pick Aaron Cadman after resisting the urge to blood the key forward in the first month.

The Giants confirmed the talented 19-year-old will make his AFL debut against Hawthorn at Norwood Oval on Sunday after he was put on standby before their round 5 loss to Essendon last round.

The Hawks will also unveil a debutant with speedy 2020 draftee Seamus Mitchell given his first chance to shine in the brown and gold.

Richmond has lost three stars to injury with Tom Lynch, Toby Nankervis and Jack Graham all missing its blockbuster clash with Sydney at Adelaide Oval.

They have been replaced by goalkicker Jack Riewoldt after the three-time premiership star was managed last week, with versatile tall Ben Miller also set to play a hand in the ruck to support four-game Tiger Samson Ryan.

Former skipper Trent Cotchin has also been named in the 22 after he was brought on as the sub in the loss to the Bulldogs.

Sydney tall stocks have been decimated with Tom and Paddy McCartin, Lance Franklin and Dane Rampe all missing with injury, with debutant Corey Warner, Hayden McLean and Matt Roberts named as inclusions.

The Western Bulldogs have also lost three players to injury, headlined by midfielder Bailey Smith.

Alex Keath and Hayden Crozier will also miss their crunch Saturday night contest against Port Adelaide with Tim O’Brien, Taylor Duryea, Cody Weightman called up to the senior side.

North Melbourne’s defence has been bolstered by key backs Ben McKay and Griffin Logue as Brisbane welcomes back running defender Daniel Rich.

The Demons have left out defenders Jake Lever (injured) and Michael Hibberd (managed) and brought back talls Adam Tomlinson and Ben Brown, with Tom McDonald named at centre-half back.

Essendon forward Will Snelling will play his first game for the season, replacing father-son draftee Alwyn Davey who has been managed.

Mature-age recruit Corey Wagner will make his Dockers debut as he continues his career at a third AFL side after stints at Melbourne and North Melbourne,

Fremantle and Gold Coast have both dropped three players for their Friday afternoon contest in Norwood, with Justin Longmuir dropping playmakers Liam Henry, Nathan Wilson and Nathan O’Driscoll.
