AFL Round 10 Brisbane v Richmond: More pain for Tigers as Lions get season back on track

Richmond were once again cast aside with ease on a Saturday night, this time at the hands of the Lions, and Adem Yze admits his side may have lost spirit in the 119-point loss to the Lions.

The claws were out in a battle of the big cats, as the Brisbane Lions demolished the travelling Tigers in Sir Doug Nicholls Round, inflicting more pain on the banged-up Tigers.

The Lions have now put two dominant home ground victories together, walking away with a comfortable 119-point win on Saturday night.

Spearhead Joe Daniher filled his boots against a Richmond team depleted by injuries, booting three goals from nine marks and 19 disposals.

Dayne Zorko had the lion’s share of the ball and the Tigers inability to defend, coupled with their skill errors, left coach Adem Yze scratching his head – again.

Ravaged by injury, Richmond only had 26 healthy players available to pick from and it was always facing a tough task travelling up to the Sunshine State.

“It was really disappointing, we are never happy giving up 150 points in a game, irrelevant of the personnel we have,” Yze said post-match.

“We’ve just got to be honest... we’re a proud footy club and our supporters expect us to be really competitive, when we’re not we won’t be happy.

“When we’re going through what we are going through, we can lose a bit of spirit and I sensed that in the first half.

“We’re trying different things to get support for our captain and leaders but our leaders are really disappointed.”

“Our synergy and our team defence is out of whack, it was too easy for them.”

The Lions are now four wins and five losses as they aim to rescue their season.

BRISBANE TOO SLICK, TOO CLEAN

A midfield demolition gave the Lions forwards easy access, aided by a dominant display in the ruck by Oscar McInerney against Tigers skipper Toby Nankervis.

Midfielder Josh Dunkley celebrated game 150 and his side were up by 65 points at half time.

Veterans Dion Prestia and Dustin Martin were shouldering the load for the visitors but were outworked and outclassed by Brisbane.

Zorko continued his incredible season, the newly positioned half-back was on fire in the first half, amassing 22 touches and carving up the Tigers through the corridor. He finished with 35 possessions.

Coach Chris Fagan would be pleased with his youngsters, particularly Kai Lohmann, who booted two goals in the first term and finished with five majors.

AH CHEE FLYS HIGH

Callum Ah Chee took a mark of the year contender in the second term, closely replicating the Anzac Day special by Collingwood superstar Jamie Elliott.

He rose above Tigers defender Nathan Broad in a one-on-one hanger, got the lift off Broad’s shoulders and hung spectacularly, to the oohs’ and aahs’ of the crowd.

The crowd barely had a moment to catch their breath when Charlie Cameron kicked a vintage pack-roving, small forward goal – one of his five on the night.

MORE BAD NEWS FOR LUCKLESS TIGERS

Just when you though the Tigers’ luckless run with injuries could not get any worse, they were forced to make a halftime substitute and go down to three rotations on the bench in the final term.

Richmond forward Mykelti Lefau suffered a knock to the jaw from Lions key defender Jack Payne in the second quarter and was substituted out of the game at half time.

Then Tigers youngster Rhyan Mansell received some unlucky friendly fire to the head from captain Nankervis and did not play any of the final term.

Richmond remains second bottom of the ladder and will face Essendon next Saturday in the Dreamtime at the G clash, while Brisbane travels to face Hawthorn in Melbourne.
