AFL 2022 Sydney Swans v Collingwood: All the latest news from the round 22 match

Sydney has ended Collingwood’s incredible 11-game winning streak and the Pies are likely to lose controversy lightning rod Jack Ginnivan for next week’s Carlton blockbuster.

Collingwood will be sweating on the fitness of superstar Jordan De Goey and livewire forward Jack Ginnivan for a mammoth round 23 clash with Carlton on Sunday that will determine their top four spot in the finals.

With Melbourne facing Brisbane on Friday night, the fifth-placed Magpies can usurp the loser of that game and jump into the top four with a win over the Blues.

In the process, they can eliminate their fiercest rivals in Carlton from the finals altogether.

It’s the stage you want your matchwinners for, and De Goey seems the more likely of the Magpies duo to play after he was a late omission from the side that lost to Sydney by 27 points at the SCG on Sunday.

“He pulled up pretty sore on Friday after training but we still had 48 hours, so we thought we’d bring him up here and work on him but it just wasn’t improving,” Collingwood coach Craig McRae said.

“We probably made the decision yesterday (Saturday) afternoon, to be honest. It’s just a tight hip-flexor. Are we confident he plays next week? Somewhat. He’ll just need to get through training and see.

“There’s a lot to lose this time of year. If you put a guy out there who’s not 100 per cent you can potentially do a lot of damage.”

Ginnivan will be battling to recover in time for the MCG affair on Sunday though after he was subbed out of the loss to Sydney with a hamstring problem shortly after kicking a big goal in the second quarter.

“He got some hamstring tightness. He even kicked that goal with a tight hamstring and it was bordering on a strain. We’ll have to see what it is, but he’d be unlikely to play next week I’d have thought,” McRae said.

Ginnivan was once more the pantomime villain at the SCG with the Swans fans jeering him as his face was splashed on the big screen after being subbed out.

The second-year forward offered a wry smile in response, with his only goal of the game coming courtesy of a free kick for a high tackle, which the 19-year-old has become notorious for this season.

“We ask our players to be themselves and express themselves. I’m not sure what to say. Jack got a free-kick for a high tackle, we like that,” McRae said.

The booing drew a strong response on Twitter from Pies star Taylor Adams, who labelled the crowd “grubs”.

In the absence of De Goey and Ginnivan, Brody Mihocek and Jamie Elliott needed to deliver in attack for the Pies but were ineffective as they combined for 12 disposals and a goal between them.

“Their defence was outstanding. The expanses of the MCG allow us to spread the field. This ground didn’t allow us to do that but they didn’t allow us as well,” McRae said.

“We showed them some stuff at halftime to move the ball differently, but I thought the McCartin brothers were really strong in the air and their backline was dominant today.”

Sydney ended Collingwood’s famous 11-game winning run and hammered home its premiership credentials with a 27-point win in front of a record crowd at the SCG.

A total of 44,659 fans – the second-highest ever attendance at the SCG for a Swans home-and-away game – watched their beloved Bloods rocket to second place on the AFL ladder a week out from the finals by ending the momentum wave the Magpies had been riding for the best part of three months.

Sydney’s ball-winning beasts were far too strong with James Rowbottom in particular shining with 24 disposals, eight tackles and seven clearances along with a superb snapped goal from 50m out on a standing start early in the last quarter.

Callum Mills and Luke Parker were imposing as well while their fellow co-captain Dane Rampe gave the SCG faithful a moment to remember late in the game with a desperate goal-saving bump on Mihocek that brought the fans to their feet.

In attack the Swans superstars shared the spoils with Lance Franklin kicking three goals to make it 48 for the season while Isaac Heeney and Tom Papley each kicked two.

Along with Rampe’s act of desperation, the Swans faithful were thrilled by a bit

of showtime late on as Heeney tapped a ball down for Franklin in front of goal

to put the home side out of sight and into outright second spot.

NO GO FOR DE GOEY

Just when you think Jordan De Goey is up and going at his best again, he suffers another setback. After two excellent weeks in a row since returning from injury, a hip flexor issue forced the Magpies into making a massive late change. With Taylor Adams already missing, it made Collingwood’s quest for 12 wins in a row a far more difficult task.

RARE RAMPE GOAL

You had a feeling it would be Sydney’s day from the early stages when co-captain Dane Rampe slotted a rare major in the first quarter. The kick from outside 50 was Rampe’s seventh goal of his illustrious career and his first since round 20 of 2016, his All-Australian year.

Pies take massive hit ahead of Swans showdown

Collingwood’s hopes of stretching their winning run to 12 and snaring second spot a week out from the finals have suffered a hammer blow with Jordan De Goey a late omission from their blockbuster clash with Sydney at the SCG.

A hip flexor issue to De Goey forced the Pies to make the change with youngster Trent Bianco coming into the final 22.

The superstar midfielder-forward has been in excellent touch since returning to the Pies side two weeks ago with 23 and 25 disposals respectively in wins over Port and Melbourne.

Both Callum Brown and Trent Bianco sat out the Magpies VFL game with Sydney in preparation for a late change.

Collingwood is already without gun midfielder Taylor Adams for the clash with the Swans, who have won their last five games in a row and can also move into second spot with a win.
