Nasty incident lands GWS Giants skipper Toby Greene in hot water

GWS Giants skipper Toby Greene could be set to draw the attention of the AFL match review officer over an ugly incident.

Greene in hot water for tunneling?

Toby Greene could be set for another trip to the tribunal following a nasty incident in GWS’ thumping win over West Coast.

Midway through the second term, Matt Owies went up for a mark inside 50 but came crashing to the turf after Greene appeared to tunnel him.

It forced a stoppage in the play so Owies could receive medical attention, but Fox Footy expert Jordan Lewis believes he is in the clear.

“I think he’s a ball player and he was certainly trying to go in front of Owies to impact that contest, then got himself in a tricky situation,” he said.

“If we see (Bayley) Fritsch get a fine, I think Fritsch’s was much worse than what we saw there.”

Fritsch was hit with a $1500 fine for his incident with Tom Stewart on Friday night when many called for him to miss multiple weeks.

It was the only negative on a day to remember for the Giants where Jesse Hogan starred with nine goals in the 81-point victory.

While pleased with their start and finish to the contest, coach Adam Kingsley said conceding inside 50s was a key area for improvement if they want to mix it with the elite teams in the competition.

“We are conceding too many entries. We know that. There were 55 today,” he said.

“That has to reduce if we want to become a team that is a legitimate finals contender in my view.

“But our backs ability particularly and our mids workrate to help defend entries is elite at the moment.

“That gives me great comfort. But we need to help our backs more.”

Stephen Coniglio sent a minor scare through the camp when he was a late withdrawal, but Kingsley believes it was just a case of being precautious.

“Cogs just woke up on Saturday morning with a bit of soreness in his glute,” he said.

“We tested him before the game thinking he would probably be okay, but he was just a bit worried about hamstring and glute stuff.

“I think he’ll be fine next week.”
