The Score: Get the latest on Dustin Martin’s Brownlow Medal date and an ugly social media stoush

ALL eyes are going to be on Dustin Martin at this year’s Brownlow Medal. But who will be sitting next to him at the count? He has selected one lucky teammate.

DUSTIN Martin is sticking to what he knows best for his Brownlow Medal date.

Teammate Sam Lloyd has again won the honour of being Martin’s plus one at the AFL’s night of nights.

Given the cameras are going to be trained on Martin for the entire night, his selection of a partner was always going to be a hotly contested affair.

Lloyd was alongside him last year when he finished third behind Patrick Dangerfield.

GIANT BLOW: SEASON OVER FOR GWS FORWARD

Martin had been hoping to have his father, Shane, by his side but the Federal Government has blocked his return from New Zealand where he was extradicted because of outlaw motorbike links.

Lloyd is currently out of the side, having been dropped in Round 16.

Given Dangerfield is out of the race because of suspension this season, Martin will go into the count as the shortest priced favourite in Brownlow Medal history at $1.10.

He’s expected to even challenge Dangerfield’s record tally of 35 votes from last year.

Another Richmond star getting a late call-up to the Brownlow is full-forward Jack Riewoldt who was strangely left off the invite list but is getting a gig with Alex Rance whose wife isn’t attending.

OH NO, WHAT HAS HE DONE?

CHANNEL Seven’s Nathan Templeton and former Hockeyroo star Georgie Parker were embroiled in an entertaining twitter stoush over the weekend.

Unfortunately for Templeton, a keen Geelong fan, he didn’t do his research when he replied to a tweet Parker sent out on Saturday night during the Port Adelaide-West Coast elimination final.

Parker wrote: “THIS is the advantage the home team should get. The crowd behind you which makes you lift. Something the Cats didn’t get last night.”

Templeton replied: “Everyone understands crowd support feels nice and gives a lift. But shouldn’t highly-paid, full-time professionals just try hard anyway??”

Parker wasn’t finished, replying with: “Cute. I like ya (sic) Nathan, but you’ve clearly never played elite sport if you think ‘trying hard’ is the reason a home crowd is important.”

Templeton’s next response was what got him in trouble: “Thanks for the feedback Georgie. Let me know when you play ‘elite sport”.

Twitter went into meltdown with Parker less then impressed as she proceeded to enlighten Templeton of her career credits which included competing at Olympic Games, World Cup, Commonwealth Games before adding that she’d just signed up with Collingwood in the AFLW.

The following morning Templeton clearly understood how big the hole he’d dug was, issuing an apology on Twitter and followed it up with a 30-minute phone call to Parker who later revealed she’d accepted his “heartfelt and sincere” apology.

Naturally, Channel Nine’s website seized on the furore and took great delight in embarrassing their rival.

CATS CAN’T TAKE A TRICK

GEELONG were deflated very early on Friday night and maybe it started at the toss.

All week the debate had centred around how the Cats were disadvantaged by having to play their “home” finals game at the MCG which is the home of Richmond.

Unfortunately this was rammed home to Geelong captain Joel Selwood at the coin toss.

“Joel, you’re the visiting team. You’re call,” was the welcome he received from the field umpire in charge of the ceremony.

Adding further insult to the Cats, they were also allocated the visitor’s rooms.

CAMBAGE READY FOR SCHOOL

SHE’S one of the best basketballers in the world but Liz Cambage admits she’s been packing herself ahead of her return to the WNBL this season.

“Oh my God, I was so nervous, like the Thursday night before my first practice I was felt like a little kid on the first day of school,” Cambage said.

“I was like ‘Are the girls going to like me?’, you know, ‘Is this guy going to be mean to me?’.”

Cambage will line up for the Melbourne Boomers, who were actually the Bulleen Boomers the last time she was in the league back in 2012.

THE WHISPER

Did Melbourne trade away more than just an experienced defender when they let Lynden Dunn go to Collingwood? It turns out he was the key footy trip organiser and without him the Demons have found themselves with nothing planned.
