SuperCoach: Late mail, team news and scores from every Round 4 match

Popular picks Brodie Grundy, Patrick Cripps and Tom Rockliff fired, but we saw signs of fatigue from several starting rookies in Round 4. EVERY SUPERCOACH SCORE

It’s been a tough round for SuperCoaches but if you had the VC on Brodie Grundy or the C on Patrick Cripps, then you’ve got plenty to smile about.

Cripps was sensational for the Blues in the thrilling loss to Gold Coast, although that will be of no consolation to the man himself as his side slumped to 0-4.

No. 1 draft pick Sam Walsh backed up his first 100-plus score last week against Sydney with another huge effort against Gold Coast, being one of the few rookies to deliver in SuperCoach in Round 4.

ST KILDA v HAWTHORN

Late mail: Jaeger O’Meara (hip) out of the selected team. Replaced by Daniel Howe.

Jarryn Geary (virus) out for St Kilda, replaced by Ben Paton.

Heroes: Seb Ross (133) was the leading player on the ground in midfield for the Saints, while Jack Billings (126) was back to the type of form which made him a premium forward in 2017. Ruckman Rowan Marshall (119) continues to deliver for the Saints, while Jack Newnes (114) and defensive rookie Calum Wilkie (112) shone. Wilkie will be a handy money maker for the next month now. For the Hawks, Tom Scully (110) played his best game, James Sicily (119) showed why he’s likely to be a top defender again and Jack Scrimshaw (98) came close to reaching triple figures for the first time in brown and gold. Ricky Henderson (101) was the other Hawthorn player to crack the ton.

Villains: The forward rookies are causing serious heartburn for SuperCoaches this year and Matt Parker (32) was the lowest-scoring Saint in their nailbiting win. Do what you can to get those forward rookies off the ground as soon as possible as they are dragging overall scores down. Chad Wingard could only manage 54 points in his second game for Hawthorn and is all but certain to drop in price after next week, while Jack Gunston (58) was well below his best.

GOLD COAST v CARLTON

Late mail: No late changes for either team.

Heroes: Cripps was expected to go big against the Suns and he delivered, top-scoring with 169 SuperCoach points to put a massive smile on the faces of SuperCoaches who backed him in as their captain. Sam Walsh recorded his second hundred of the season with 123 points and will surely get the Rising Star nomination, while Kade Simpon also notched up triple figures. Touk Miller (110) and David Swallow (110) top-scored for the Suns, while cash cow Sam Collins put in another good performance, scoring 87 points.

Villains: Will Setterfield continues to cause frustration, scoring just 54 points, while Michael Gibbons (54) was much better than last week but he’s got a long way to go to get back on our good side. Owners of Jack Lukosius and Chris Burgess would be disappointed as the pair scored just 29 and 30 respectively.

WEST COAST v FREMANTLE

Late changes: Lewis Jetta out of West Coast side, replaced by Josh Rotham.

Heroes: David Mundy (151) was obviously just warming up. After scores of 73 and just 35 to start the season, plenty traded him out. He popped out 104 last week and then went massive in the derby. Shannon Hurn (139) lived up to his premo defence label and price with a towering game, while Elliot Yeo (114) finally got off the leash and breached three figures for the first time this season.

Villains: David Mundy — to those who traded him out after his 35 in Round 2. Popular cheapie Jack Petrucelle kicked two goals in the first quarter and was on 33 at quarter time. He was looking at a massive score but, true to the nature of small forwards and SuperCoach, he managed just three more points for the match. Can you score 104 and be a villain? For the second week in a row, Andrew Gaff has churned out a huge disposal count (35) but only just cracked the ton. We’ll give you a pass, for now, Andrew, but what are you doing with the footy?

NORTH MELBOURNE v ADELAIDE

Late changes: No late changes

Heroes: Big Goldy (113) rewarded those who plumbed for him over one of Max Gawn or Brodie Grundy in the ruck with his third ton in four starts, Jasper Pittard (109) made it back-to-back tons and could be emerging as a sneaky cheap POD in defence. Brodie Smith (104) finally hit three figures — ensuring a huge price rice next round — while Rory Laird (106) was also productive in defence.

Villains: Brad Crouch (77) easily eclipsed his break even of 45 but, with over 54,000 SuperCoaches putting their faith in him as a mid-price option, they would be hoping for more. That break even is creeping up. It’s harsh, but Chayce Jones was knocked out in a heavy collision early in the match and took no further part. He’s in more than 10,000 teams as a cheapie option, but scored just 9 points — well short of his break even of 26.

PORT ADELAIDE v RICHMOND

Heroes: From Tigers whipping boy to SuperCoach king — and Port conqueror. Brandon Ellis (127) was among the stars for the Tigers in their gutsy win, while leaders Dylan Grimes (124) — who was huge in the final term — and spearhead Tom Lynch (103) also played key roles. Ball magnet Tom Rockliff (140) got Port rolling, while Travis Boak’s (134) career resurgence continued.

Villains: Port star Robbie Gray (72) isn’t yet having his usual influence in 2019. Port’s rookies — so heavily relied on by thousands of SuperCoaches — were also noticeably quieter. It was an even Tigers effort, but rookies Sydney Stack (40) and Noah Balta (14) were unable to produce their recent heroics.

ESSENDON v BRISBANE LIONS

Heroes: Zach Merrett was back to his prolific, efficient best as he carved his way through the Lions on his way to a whopping 155 points. Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti’s career-best day in front of goal netted 143, while Lachie Neale’s phenomenal Brisbane start continued as he did damage on his way to 140 points.

Villains: Lion skipper Dayne Zorko hasn’t hit his 2018 heights and could only manage 63 in his team’s disappointing day. No. 1 draft pick Cam Rayner hardly touched it on his way to just 19, while Bomber Devon Smith (64) was quieter than recent times.

GEELONG v GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY

Heroes: Cometh the big moments, cometh the men. GWS’s on-ball stars Lachie Whitfield (137), Josh Kelly (114), Tim Taranto (113) and Shane Mumford (111) all delivered. Throw in

Stephen Coniglio (104) and Jacob Hopper (106) and it’s little wonder the Giants took the points. Cats stars Tom Stewart (124), Tom Hawkins (111) and Gary Ablett (106) needed more support.

Villains: Oh Danger, my Danger. The Geelong champ was well down on his usual output, recording just 66 points after five second-half possessions. Tim Kelly (39) was shut out of the game by Matt de Boer.

COLLINGWOOD v WESTERN BULLDOGS

Heroes: Need we say more? Grundy was epic as he monstered the lighly-framed Tim English. Tom Phillips (116) racked up a heap of the footy and also hit the scoreboard, while Steele Sidebottom’s precision by foot ensured he scored heavily. For the Bulldogs, Marcus Bontempelli (127) continued his superb start to 2019, while prolific Jack Macrae (110) did his usual thing.

Villains: They both contributed but Scott Pendlebury (74) and Adam Treloar (83) didn’t reach their usual heights. Toby McLean regularly went big last season and won plenty of admirers, so his 71 points was a quieter night for him.

SYDNEY v MELBOURNE

Heroes: Max Gawn (113) wasn’t quite at his 2018 heights but the Dees star dominated around the stoppages and finished strongly. Isaac Heeney, traded by thousands a week ago, followed up his big day against the Blues with a match-high 130. Jake Lloyd (109) and Luke Parker (100) were solid. Late inclusion Marty Hore (86), on the bench of thousands of SuperCoach teams, showed better things might lie ahead with a respectable first outing.

Villains: The Dees won the day but many of their highly-fancied stars didn’t have their usual impact. Angus Brayshaw (89) and Clayton Oliver (87) played well but didn’t rack up their usual scores, while Swans Callum Mills (66), Callum Sinclair (35) and rookie hope Nick Blakey (31) had largely forgettable nights.
