Chris Scott doesn’t mind a dash of confidence in a kid.
So when Geelong’s first round draft selection, 18-year-old Jordan Clark, dragged down a mark early in his first JLT clash against the team he used to barrack for, West Coast, last month the coach couldn’t help but be impressed.

MASON COX: WHY DOES THE AFL WANT TO BE AMERICAN?
It was the moment Scott first believed Clark might be ready to make his debut in Friday night’s Round 1 game against Collingwood at the MCG - even if he had been trying to find reasons to hold him back.
That’s partly because the young defender from WA hadn’t previously undergone a pre-season due to cricket commitments. Even this pre-season, he didn’t start full sessions until after Christmas due to glandular fever.
But every time the club presented the one-time Australian underage cricketer with a new hurdle, he sailed across it.
“It’s easy to get excited about the training stuff where there is not much intensity, but when we played Jordan in our first pre-season game, and he jumped up and marked one in the back 50, if nothing else, it was a sign of his confidence,” Scott told the Herald Sun.
“We are really confident he has got the ability to come in and make an impact straight away. But our confidence is secondary to his.”
Clark has always loved taking risks and backing his judgment, and that has been encouraged further in his short time at Geelong.
He rarely gets nervous, but concedes the occasion on Friday night will have his heart pumping at higher speed than usual.
The only previous occasion he has been to the MCG was under vastly different circumstances. It was last June, when he was a part of the WA under 18s carnival side sitting in the stands watching the Carlton-Port Adelaide game.
“It was nearly empty,” he said of the less than 30,000 fans in attendance. “It will be different (on Friday night).
“I’m not big on getting nervous, but I definitely will be.
“Obviously, there is a lot more to do now, and it is not just about playing. I want to make an impact straight away, if I can.”
Clark’s family will be there Friday - parents Russell and Natalie, his three brothers and sister, his grandparents, even his best mate from school, Dylan Brooks - among an expected 80,000 fans for the Cats-Magpies clash.
“It’s going to be hard to top,” he said of making his AFL debut.
Born and bred in Mandurah, he moved to Albany with his family when he was 13, and spent the last two years of his schooling in Perth.
There was times when his parents had to drive him for training sessions between Albany and Perth (more than 400 kilometres each way) several times per week.
“I missed about 100 days of school in Year 10,” he said.
“It’s lucky dad had a company car.”
Clark’s cricket prowess was such that he took a hat-trick on the Australian under 16s tour to Dubai against Pakistan in January 2017.
But it was his performances for WA last year in the Under 18s championships - in particular a standout game at GMHBA Stadium - that saw him chose football above cricket, and saw the Cats swoop in to take him as pick 15 in the draft.
Alongside Clark on Friday night will be some of the players who have made his transition into the club as smooth as possible.
“Tommy Stewart has been a big help for me,” he said. “Everything he does helps me, and it is the same with ‘Blics’ (Mark Blicavs) and Harry Taylor.
“That’s why those guys are in the leadership group, and ‘Scarlo’ (defensive coach Matthew Scarlett) has really helped me as well.”
The laid-back lifestyle in Geelong - where he lives with a host family, the Furphys, across the road from he ground - suits him ideally.
But Cats insiders are confident that within Clark’s relaxed attitude and quietly confident demeanour sits a burning ambition to be the best he can be
