As Michael Jordan fever hit following the release of ‘The Last Dance’ documentary, there seemed to be one question on repeat.

Which Australian athlete could feature in something similar?

Every talkback radio station and TV sports show asked it and then debated it non-stop for weeks as the extraordinary Jordan series had the country gripped to Netflix.

Well, we have an answer and it‘s an obvious one.

Richmond star Dustin Martin is doing an ‘MJ’ with a feature documentary on his life already in production.

Richard Lowenstein’s Ghost Pictures is collaborating with independent producer Mark Fennessy on the Martin project.

The pair worked together last year on the critically acclaimed documentary - Mystify: Michael Hutchence - about the INXS lead singer‘s troubled life.

Screen Australia has provided development funding to the Martin project which has the working title ‘Gold Dust’.

A key storyline in the documentary will be Martin‘s New Zealand father, Shane, a former high-ranking member of the Rebels motorcycle gang, who was again refused entry to Australia in February.,

“It will be a fascinating story; the treatment reads beautifully,” Lowenstein told Inside Film Magazine.

So be warned, another round of Dusty v Jordan comparisons are about to hit.

LITTLE MASTER’S BOOK RELEASE

After Gary Ablett turned back the clock against Hawthorn for the season‘s resumption, Geelong coach Chris Scott raised his eyebrows when the word retirement was mentioned.

Everyone had assumed this was going to be his final season but the two-time Brownlow Medallist‘s vote-catching performance had given some cause for contemplation.

But any wriggle room, however small, has been erased by Ablett‘s book publisher.

Hardie Grant are certainly in no doubt that this is the Little Master‘s final year given they’ve announced the release of his autobiography on November 5 to “coincide with the completion of the 2020 AFL season and Gary’s retirement from the AFL”.

Gary Ablett’s autobiography will be released in November.

The book, titled ‘Gary Ablett: Autobiography’, will include many never-before-seen photographs from the family’s private collections plus guest chapters.

Featuring as a guest writer is Gary Snr whose relationship with his oldest son will be of the more intriguing narratives in the book.

Interestingly, Ablett‘s former coach Mark Thompson will also be contributing which is fascinating given the pair ended on bad terms when the Cats premiership hero left for the Gold Coast.

Geelong captain Joel Selwood will also be penning a chapter.

Ablett, who turned 36 in May, is scheduled to play his 350th game against the Suns at GMHBA Stadium in Round 5.

“It’s been a really interesting process to go back over the years, plus I’ve been lucky to have a few others step in with their recollections,” he said.

“Football has given me so much over the years, it will be great to share my story.”
