BRISBANE fans who have been hearing for two years the future is bright are starting to enjoy the present but Carlton is again mired in humiliation after a horrible loss at the Gabba.

DAYNE Beams or Eric Hipwood?

You could take your pick of the name worthy of a headline from Brisbane’s rout at the Gabba but in the end it was the numbers that told the story.

Lions fans who have been hearing for two years their future is bright are starting to enjoy the present after Brisbane broke a three-year drought with a 65-point victory over Carlton in front of 21,074.

The 18.12 (120) to 7.13 (55) win was the biggest since the Lions defeated Collingwood at the MCG in 2014.

The last time the Lions won back-to-back games was Round 6 and 7, 2015 against Carlton and Port Adelaide, to put that in perspective six-goal hero Hipwood was still in high school, as was Hugh McCluggage, Jarrod Berry, Cameron Rayner, Rhys Mathieson and Alex Witherden.

Carlton’s Charlie Curnow is considered the best young key forward in the game and did his best to finish with 3.1, but it was his opposite No.30 who stole the show.

Hipwood’s 6.2 was the best return from a Lion forward since Daniel Merrett booted seven in a thrashing of a first-year GWS outfit in 2014.

The Lions, who hadn’t won a first quarter until last week have now won eight straight quarters and seem to be a class level above the likes of Carlton and the Gold Coast.

Dayne Beams is in a purple patch of form.

Since wife Kelly delivered their first son, Carter, and second child two weeks ago, the former skipper has surely collected six Brownlow Medal votes.

He was best on ground in the victory over Fremantle last week and, despite Hipwood’s haul, would justifiably feel robbed if he didn’t get the nod again from the whistleblowers.

He finished with 40 possessions, eight clearances, nine marks and a goal.

All the best players wore maroon, blue and gold.

Alex Witherden, Daniel Rich, Luke Hodge and Darcy Gardiner, who collected 27 possessions and took 15 marks, against Curnow were superb in defence.

Tom Cutler had another good game and finished with 28 possessions and two goals.

Carlton had produced creditable performances over the past two weeks against Port Adelaide and Collingwood but came back to earth with a thud.

The Lions gathered 442 disposals, 145 more than the Blues, took 24 marks inside 50m to the Blues’ eight, from almost equal entries and won the clearance battle.

Matthew Kreuzer slightly shaded Stefan Martin in the hitouts but the contest was neutral around the ground while Patrick Cripps battled hard in a tough match-up with Berry.
