Field umpire Alex Whetton was forced off the field after a heavy collision with Fremantle forward Lachie Schultz at Perth Stadium.
Play was stopped for several minutes after Whetton crashed into Schultz in the middle of the ground late in the second quarter.
A dazed Whetton lay motionless on the turf after the accidental clash of heads, but still managed to blow his whistle to signal a mark to Essendon’s Adam Saad as he fell to the deck.
Schultz was running to intercept a kick from Bombers forward Orazio Fantasia when Whetton moved into his path.

The umpire was helped to his feet and walked off the ground before he was replaced by the emergency field umpire for the rest of the match.
Whetton wasn’t the only causality on the night with Essendon star David Zaharakis limping off with an ankle injury.
