Essendon has dropped a selection bombshell with star midfielder Devon Smith out of the Good Friday clash with North Melbourne, with the Dogs also swinging the axe.

Smith has been “managed”, coach John Worsfold revealed, given a lingering knee issue.

And the Bombers saw a window of opportunity and have taken it.

“We’re managing a chronic knee problem that he arrived with,” he said.

“It just feels like this is an opportunity now — for where we’re at with the season and with what we’ve got coming up — that we’ll make sure he’s up and going and playing his best footy for the rest of the year.”

EXPERT ADVICE: THE PHANTOM’S SUPERCOACH Q&A

Matt Guelfi has been included as his replacement, with forward Joe Daniher to play in the VFL on Saturday after not playing since Round 7 of last season.

“Weighing up how long Joe’s been out of the game, what his progress has been over the last couple of months in terms of getting him back playing and the fixturing as well … we’ve settled on a pathway to getting Joe back to playing his best footy at senior level this way,” Worsfold said.

Western Bulldogs forward Josh Schache has been dropped for the club’s Easter Sunday meeting with Carlton, with the final team — which will be without Taylor Duryea (hip) and Matt Suckling (groin) — to be finalised on Friday.

Richmond will welcome back premiership pair Dustin Martin and Bachar Houli, who had been suspended and injured respectively, for its clash with Sydney on Saturday night, with Jack Graham forced to make way.

Melbourne veteran Jordan Lewis will play for the first time this season after a hamstring injury, joined by Neville Jetta, while Fremantle skipper Nat Fyfe will return from concussion.

Plenty of SuperCoaches will be pleased to see North has named Bailey Scott in its side, but there will be a few hitting the reverse changes button after defensive cash cow Josh Rotham was left out of the West Coast side in favour of Lewis Jetta who returns for the Eagles after missing the Western Derby with hamstring tightness.

Port Adelaide has recalled Todd Marshall after dropping Steven Motlop.

The Western Bulldogs have confirmed Will Hayes and Lachie Young will debut.

Tonsillitis ruined Jackson Hately’s first shot at an AFL debut, but the GWS Giants young gun is now ready to clear his throat after being picked to take on Fremantle in Canberra on Saturday.

Hately bulked up 4kg after being drafted by the Giants last year only to lose all that weight to the crippling illness on the eve of Round 1 when coach Leon Cameron was about to blood him against Essendon.

However, Callan Ward’s season-ending knee injury has ensured Hately hasn’t had to wait long for take two and the Canberra-born midfielder is relishing the special touch of being able to make his AFL debut in front of grandparents and family in the nation’s capital.

“Yeah I got tonsillitis about a week before round one, which was unfortunate timing,” he said.

“I lost about 4kg so it probably set me back a bit. Since then it’s just been about putting that weight back on and then playing some full games of footy (in the NEAFL).

“I’ve been able to do that now and I’m back up to the weight I was at and I’ve got a couple of game sunder my belt.

“It was unfortunate timing but I’m glad I’m back now and ready to go.”

Hately is looking at his role replacing Ward as a wider responsibility for the team but aims to seek out his mentor, recovering from knee surgery, before first bounce on Saturday.

“I think Callan is obviously such a big part of the club and has been for such a long time. I think it would be silly for me to come in just think I can be like that captain like player that he is,” said Hately.

“I think it’s more about all of us stepping up to cover that one person instead of just me feeling like I have to come in and be that leader.

“I’m just going to play the role I know the coach thinks I can play and I know I can play … which will be on a wing. That’s what I’m going to focus on this week, just doing the role I know I can.”

After leaving Canberra for South Australia as a toddler, Hately became the kid who grew up on a schoolyard, living on campus due to his father’s job as a teacher and Principal at some of Adelaide’s best schools, where an oval and football posts were never far away.

“I was born in Canberra so mum’s family is from Canberra and I still have grandparents there and cousins and aunties and uncles. Most of my family does still live in Canberra,” he said.

“I was only there for a couple of years but nearly every holidays and things like that we’d be visiting so it has been a pretty big part of my childhood growing up.

“It’s pretty cool to have the debut there and there will be a lot of family there which is pretty special.”

Sydney star Isaac Heeney was named for the Swans’ huge clash against Richmond despite missing training on Tuesday after copping a knock late in the Swans’ loss to Melbourne last Thursday night.

Fremantle confirmed news Ross Lyon delivered earlier in the week that captain Nat Fyfe will play against GWS.

“100 per cent yes (he will be playing),” Lyon said on Seven News in Perth.

“He passed his cog-state yesterday, he trained fully today. Really vibrant, in a sense freshened, so we’re quite excited by his return.”

Fyfe missed the western derby with concussion after a sickening clash of heads with St Kilda’s Josh Battle.
