JESSE Hogan will be ruing more than a missed shot at goal with the Melbourne spearhead certain to become the next victim of the AFL’s crackdown on staging. WATCH THE INCIDENT
MELBOURNE spearhead Jesse Hogan is facing a certain fine for staging.
Hogan produced one of the best games of his career with three goals and 25 possessions as part of a taller Melbourne forward line. But Hogan may rue staging for a free kick in the third term when he fell backwards after a light push from St Kilda defender Jake Carlisle. Hogan won the free kick but missed the set shot from 15m. THE TACKLE: ROBBO’S LIKES AND DISLIKES FROM ROUND 7 HUGE SCARE: LATE GOAL LIFTS MAGPIES TO GREAT ESCAPE He seems certain to become the next victim of the AFL’s crackdown on staging, joining Collingwood’s Mason Cox, Brisbane Lions’ Mitch Robinson and Essendon’s Josh Green as players who have been hit with a $1000 fine. Coach Simon Goodwin said the Demons had values they wanted to uphold on the field. “I would have liked him to kick the goal, but if there is commentary around it, I guess we will have a look at it during the week,” Goodwin said. “We want to be seen as a nice strong footy team.” Otherwise, Goodwin was delighted with Hogan’s continued impressive form after a knee problem last week, saying the spearhead had matured into a more consistent and professional AFL player. “He has been outstanding this year,” Goodwin said. “He had a slightly different preparation this week. “He didn’t do much with the main team and really got himself prepared really strongly for the game.” MICHAEL WARNER, SAM LANDSBERGER AND NICK SMART DISCUSS THE BIG ISSUES FROM ROUND 7 Goodwin said Hogan had become a more dedicated player on the back of a terrible season dealing with his cancer scare and the loss of his father. “He has built some really strong habits around his training,’’ he said. “He is physically more mature in the way that he can handle loads of a full season and games. “He is in great physical shape and I think he is in a really good mental space to compete strongly week after week.” Melbourne played a three-pronged tall forward line of Hogan, Tom McDonald and youngster Sam Weideman, who combined for seven goals. Goodwin said he was encouraged by the taller set-up. “We wanted to trial that ... because we thought we would utilise Tom on the wings at times,” he said. “Having all those guys function together is really important for us. “Jesse can play not only as a tall but a small and Tom’s very similar in his ability to move around the ground. “It’s given us some options in the last few weeks and we are starting to function well as a team doing that and we will continue to do that as long as they can provide the inside 50m pressure that we are looking for.” RECAP ALL OF THE SUNDAY ACTION IN THE BLOG BELOW LIVE stream every match of every round of the 2018 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.
