AFL may be forced to back-pedal on its easing of restrictions for players following positive test

Restrictions were eased for AFL players recently, but will Conor McKenna’s positive coronavirus test force a change from the league? It could mean players will have their golf privileges revoked.

The AFL could be forced to back-pedal on its easing of restrictions for players following today’s shock positive COVID-19 test for Essendon’s Conor McKenna.

Just a week after the league allowed players back onto the golf course and into the surf, AFL boss Gillon McLachlan confirmed the league executive team will examine what the AFL’s first positive test means for its 800-plus players, including those in the Gold Coast hub.

McLaclan said McKenna’s positive test on Saturday – which came after five negative tests since returning from Ireland and an irregular result on Friday – was a reminder for the players that the coronavirus pandemic is still a significant community concern.

Asked if the AFL could repeal the concessions made to players last Monday, McLachlan said: “I’m sure the team will look at that.”

“I think they’ve been modest restrictions, what I’d say to everyone is this is an amazing reminder about why we have the protocols that are in place that are tougher than community standard on our players and our footy department officials.

There had been widespread concern among the playing group when the AFL initially placed significant restrictions on the players and football department staff member, particularly in concern to the mental welfare of those affected.

Under changes announced last Monday, players were once more granted to take part in the following exercises: golf (with another player or approved staff member from the same club, or a household or immediate family member), surfing, tennis (with another player or staff member from the same club, or a household or immediate family member) and fishing.

Players, club and match day staff were also granted access to the homes of immediate family or the homes of other players, club or match day staff.

It came after four players breached COVID-19 protocols recently with the AFL and the AFLPA committing to review regulations in an ongoing manner.
