AFL finals 2018: How AFL will prevent repeat of Ticketek debacle

THE AFL has devised a plan in a bid to prevent fans being locked out of buying finals tickets like earlier this week, with Ticketek taking it on board.

THE AFL will stagger ticket on-sale times for the rest of this year’s finals to avoid a repeat of Tuesday’s Ticketek system meltdown.

Richmond, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Geelong, Sydney and GWS members were on Wednesday finally able to log on and get a shot at tickets to see their team play finals.

But in a bid to prevent fans being locked out like earlier this week, the AFL will ask Ticketek to put seats on sale to different competing club members at different times.

“The AFL has made a decision to stagger the on sale time for the rest of finals series matches to help mitigate any Ticketek ticketing system risk,’’ AFL spokesman Jay Allen said.

“We will continue to work closely with the competing clubs to ensure all ticketing on sale times are communicated to club members and fans.”

Ticketek Australia managing director Cameron Hoy said finals ticket sales went “smoothly and efficiently’’ on Wednesday and the company would be happy to stagger future sales.

“We would be happy to work with the AFL on whatever configuration of on sale strategy they think benefits fans,’’ he said.

Ticketek staggered the release of tickets to different competing club members on Wednesday and Thursday’s general release after having to suspend sales on Tuesday.

It will also waive $7.20 transaction fees for the first week of the finals.

The AFL on Wednesday further voiced its disappointment in the major glitch and vowed to take a stronger role in the roll out of tickets during next year’s finals.

Tickets to Collingwood’s qualifying final against West Coast in Perth were on Wednesday exhausted but more could become available if unused club or AFL allocations come back in play.
