Majak Daw lands lifeline with Melbourne Demons in comeback twist

After being axed by North Melbourne, Majak Daw’s career looked as good as done but he may just line up in the AFL in round one.

Majak Daw has another shot at the AFL.

The inspirational comeback of Majak Daw may not be over after being handed a lifeline with Melbourne after being dumped by North Melbourne.

Daw returned to the AFL after suffering horrific injuries following a fall from the Bolte Bridge in late 2018 and proved to be one of the stories of the season in 2020.

The Sudanese-born star, the first African born player to play in the league, returned to the AFL in August, kicking a goal on his return.

But he was soon delisted from the Kangaroos list after the team finished 17th, just ahead of the Adelaide Crows on percentage.

It was revealed that Daw had signed on to play with North Heidelberg in 2021, ending a miserable end to the year that included a split with the mother of his son Emily McKay.

While it appeared as though his career would end as a footnote, the Demons have breathed new life into his career offering a lifeline as the club deals with an injury crisis before the season has started.

Key forwards Ben Brown and Sam Weideman have already suffered injuries and the Herald Sun speculated that Daw could push his way into the round one side for the Demons.

Daw and Max Gawn need no introduction.

Daw has been offered a chance to train with the team but he’s been given the opportunity to force his way into the Demons squad.

Melbourne list boss Tim Lamb said the team needed to find more options, with Daw able to play wherever needed.

“As part of the pre-season supplemental selection period we have offered Majak Daw an opportunity to train with us for the remainder of pre-season,” Lamb said.

“We are looking to potentially further reinforce our tall stocks and Majak will be given the opportunity to impress during this period.”

Daw will have the opportunity to fight for one of three posts on the list before the Pre-season Supplemental Selection Period closes on March 9.

Daw played just 54 games with the Kangaroos over 11 seasons with the club.

Brown is expected to miss several months after knee surgery, while Weideman broke his leg last week and faces three months on the sidelines.
