Lions star Dayne Zorko calls for Brisbane to keep wins ‘rolling’

Having bounced back to form against the Western Bulldogs, the Lions want to back it up with another win over St Kilda on Friday night.

Brisbane veteran Dayne Zorko says the Lions can’t afford to become “complacent” against St Kilda on Friday night after achieving “perfection” in their win over the Western Bulldogs.

The Lions are desperate to go on a winning run to save their season after a poor start.

Coming off a bye, 13th-placed Brisbane produced one of its best performances of the AFL season in beating the Bulldogs by 43 points last Friday at Marvel Stadium.

However, it will count for little if the Lions can’t back it up with another win against the Saints at the Gabba this week.

“It was a really good four-quarter performance, but now the important thing for us is to take that momentum that we created off that Bulldogs win and keep it rolling into the season,” Zorko told SENQ’s Breakfast with Pat and Heals.

“We’re certainly in no position to be complacent. We’ve got a big half of the season coming up, and if we want to play finals, we need performances like that every week.

“It was fantastic team effort. I can’t believe just how consistent all the players were.

“We came with a game plan and we executed it to perfection.”

Zorko saved special praise for much-maligned forward Eric Hipwood, who kicked six goals in a dominant display.

“It’s very hard to hide from the criticism that Eric receives,” the former Lions captain said.

“There’s no doubt he would have tried to hide from it as much as possible, but deep down there would be certain elements that he would have read and would have seen.

“He was raring to go. Credit to his mental strength and preparation.”

Hipwood said he knew he “needed to grow in a couple of areas”.

“I was able to execute, which was good … but it was the good work ahead of the field,” he said.

“We knew it was going to be a midfield battle, and our midfielders gave our forwards some great looks and some great one-on-ones.”

Hipwood said the Lions were solely focused on beating the Saints rather than looking too far ahead.

“When you look too far into the future you can start to get quite overwhelmed.” he said.
