AFL great Wayne Carey last week claimed Bruest was informed he could be part of any deal to secure Gold Coast midfielder Jaeger O’Meara just days before the Hawks’ semi-final against the Western Bulldogs.

Hawthorn has strongly refuted such a conversation took place and Lewis said it was not how the Hawks treated their players.

“I find that very hard to believe,” Lewis told Fox Footy last night.

“I’ve been at the club for 12 years and the club would not do that.

“I think it was Carey that ran with the story and was so convinced that it was true. Better recheck your source, I think.”

O’Meara has requested a trade to Hawthorn, which is also chasing tough Sydney midfielder Tom Mitchell and Richmond forward Tyrone Vickery.

The Hawks may have to hand over a player such as Bruest to satisy Gold Coast’s demand for an established player in return for O’Meara.

Will Langford and James Sicily have also been mentioned as possible trade bait.

Speedster Bradley Hill has told the Hawks he wants a trade home to Western Australia.
