HAVE YOUR SAY! TAKE THE POLL BELOW AND VOTE

From the Bulldogs’ incredible September run to Mummy’s crunching tackle (Mitch Duncan is still buried somewhere in StarTrack Oval) and Tom Boyd’s “greatest falcon of all time”, we’ve looked back at the iconic moments as well as the stars that have made 2016 their own.

Without further ado, the envelope please.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR

These moments certainly got us off our seats to say “wow”. Luke Beveridge tugged at the heartstrings on the Grand Final dais, Majak Daw leapt into history and Sam Lloyd gave Tiger fans one happy moment for 2016.

And the nominees are ...

Luke Beveridge giving his medal to Bob Murphy

Shane Mumford’s tackle on Mitch Duncan

Sam Lloyd’s goal to sink Sydney

Majak Daw’s Mark of the Year

Eddie Betts’ Goal of the Year

SUPERCOACH SUPERSTAR

This isn’t as straight-forward as it might seem. Yes, Patrick Dangerfield was a clear No.1 point-scorer but you’d be pretty happy if you had Lachie Neale from Round 1. Let’s not forget Max Gawn’s season as a ruckman.

And the nominees are ...

Patrick Dangerfield (Geelong)

Max Gawn (Melbourne)

Lachie Neale (Fremantle)

Dayne Zorko (Brisbane)

Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (Essendon)

BREAKOUT STAR

The next generation. Merrett blossomed into a leader at Essendon. Docherty earned All-Australian honours while Coniglio and Treloar were in the 40-man squad.

And the nominees are ...

Zach Merrett (Essendon)

Adam Treloar (Collingwood)

Lachie Hunter (W.Bulldogs)

Sam Docherty (Carlton)

Stephen Coniglio (GWS Giants)

BEST FIRST-YEAR PLAYER

Yes, Mills won the Rising Star but was here’s your chance to have your say on the best debutant of 2016. “Walla” came from nowhere to become a cult hero, Weitering looked like a 200-gamer and how good is the Aliir Aliir story?

And the nominees are ...

Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (Essendon)

Callum Mills (Sydney)

Marcus Adams (Western Bulldogs)

Jacob Weitering (Carlton)

Aliir Aliir (Sydney)

RECRUIT OF THE YEAR

A tough field with plenty of excellent contributions. Stevie J and Kelly provided veteran leadership in young teams while Treloar and Howe blended into black and white beautifully. Dangerfield needs no introduction.

And the nominees are ...

Steve Johnson (GWS Giants)

James Kelly (Essendon)

Patrick Dangerfield (Geelong)

Adam Treloar (Collingwood)

Jeremy Howe (Collingwood)

BLOOPER OF THE YEAR

Jeez, there’s plenty to like here. Brayden Maynard falling over allowing Lindsay Thomas to kick the easiest of goals, Ballantyne being handed a phone with a broken cord, Buckley’s OTT point celebration and Johnson running into an open goal only to run into Palmer first, lose the ball and split his head open.

And the nominees are ...

Brayden Maynard’s kick-in fail

Hayden Ballantyne’s phone fail

Dylan Buckley’s premature goal celebration

Stevie J and Rhys Palmer’s goalsquare collision

Tom Boyd’s falcon

COMEBACK OF THE YEAR

Wells had played a handful of games in two previous seasons but returned to star for North Melbourne while Liberatore, Smith, Petracca and Menzel all made successful returns from knee reconstructions. Yes, we know Menzel played in 2015 but this year he played 18 games.

And the nominees are ...

Daniel Wells (North Melbourne)

Tom Liberatore (W.Bulldogs)

Clay Smith (W.Bulldogs)

Christian Petracca (Melbourne)

Daniel Menzel (Geelong)

STORY OF THE YEAR

There were some remarkable stories in 2016, from the Bulldogs’ fairytale flag to Essendon’s WADA ban which dominated headlines all year.

And the nominees are ...

Western Bulldogs premiership

Mason Cox’s debut

Brent Harvey’s VFL-AFL games record

Essendon’s WADA ban

Patrick Dangerfield’s return to Geelong

FALCON OF THE YEAR

Tom Boyd’s was so good he got nominated in the Blooper of the Year, so he’s perhaps the warm favourite here, but don’t discount Priddis and Roughead while Ray’s saw him concussed.

And the nominees are ...

Tom Boyd v Carlton

Matthew Priddis v Adelaide

Jordan Roughead v GWS

Farren Ray v Adelaide

Callum Mills v Carlton

UPSET OF THE YEAR

This is a tough field. Each game was a thrill-a-minute, unless you were on the wrong end of the result. Geelong fans might not enjoy reliving this category.

And the nominees are ...

St Kilda v Geelong

Carlton v Geelong

Melbourne v Hawthorn

Collingwood v Geelong

Richmond v Sydney
