Brownlow Medal 2016: Dogs fan hoping for $343,400 collect plus other crazy bets

YOU can understand why one Dogs fan would place $200 on a Marcus Bontempelli Brownlow-Bulldogs flag double. But there is no logical explanation for betting on Mabior Chol.

EVERY Bulldogs fan is on edge this week, but one will be more nervous than most.

The supporter placed a $200 multi bet on September 29 last year, the day after the 2015 Brownlow Medal, for Marcus Bontempelli to win this year’s Brownlow and the Bulldogs to win the premiership — for a potential collect of $343,400.

PREDICTION: DANGERFIELD TIPPED TO SMASH BROWNLOW RECORD

TAB is set to pay out $879,900 (not including multis) if $1.20 favourite Patrick Dangerfield wins, with more than $100,000 in bets placed on the Geelong superstar in the past week.

A total of $1.3 million has been bet on this year’s medal, including a $16,000 wager on Dangerfield to win on Sunday morning. The $1.20 odds make the Geelong midfielder the shortest-priced favourite since records were kept in 1998.

The worst result for the TAB is Bulldog Lachie Hunter, with a payout of $880,438 if the $101 outsider wins the medal.

But he’s far from the most optimistic Brownlow bet.

Brent Harvey, Dayne Beams, Travis Cloke, Craig Bird and Richmond’s Mabior Chol — who played his first AFL game in the final home-and-away round — have all had money placed on them to win footy’s top medal.

Punters placed almost $13,000 in bets on Gary Ablett only for the two-time winner to break down after 14 games.

There is $2210 riding on a Jake Stringer win, $552 on Geelong’s Cam Guthrie, $195 on Hawk Paul Puopolo and $153 on Demon Jack Watts.

At least those guys are regulars in their respective teams. We can’t explain why someone put $10 on Lachlan Langford to win the Brownlow. The Hawthorn rookie didn’t play a senior game in 2016.

Riley Bonnor and Mabior Chol — both the subject of $5 bets — played one game each (and let’s just say Chol would be fortunate to poll after gathering two disposals in a game Richmond lost by 113 points), as did Bulldog Kieran Collins ($5). And someone obviously just liked the name Dylan Viojo-Rainbow when they put $3 on the Carlton draftee to win. He is yet to make his AFL debut.
