Fans fume over Dangerfield’s dangerous act as Cats demolish Eagles

Geelong’s Patrick Dangerfield led his team to a monster win, but one incident early in the contest left fans watching on seeing red.

Geelong are well and truly alive in 2023 after recording a second-straight big-time victory.

While fans will point out their two wins this season have only come against Hawthorn and West Coast, it’s the nature in which they’ve achieved them that will put finals hopefuls on notice.

Last weekend against Hawthorn it was a third-quarter rout that got the job done, on Sunday against the Eagles it was a scintillating patch across the first and second quarter that was all they needed.

After the Eagles kicked the opening two goals of the match, the Cats flipped the script by kicking the next 12 to all but put the result beyond doubt.

An 18-point quarter time advantage ballooned out to a whopping 64-point lead at halftime as the Cats effectively put the cue in the rack in the second half.

The Eagles cashed in by kicking 10 goals to seven as they made the margin a tad more respectable as they were toppled by 47-points at Adelaide Oval.

The win for Geelong takes them to 2-3 on the season and has them only four points outside the top eight.

Fans watching on however took issue with Cats skipper Patrick Dangerfield and two questionable acts.

The first was an eye-poke he delivered on Eagles youngster Ruben Ginbey while the second and, one that really got under the skin of fans, was a high boot in a marking contest that was once again on Ginbey.

The boot into the chest/neck area left fans questioning why the Cats star wasn’t being grilled like GWS skipper Toby Greene would have been.

Greene was thrust into the spotlight when he delivered multiple high-kicks in marking contests that resulted in him being fined by the AFL.

Fans were adamant if it was Greene doing what Dangerfield did on Sunday he would have instantly been reported.

How is that not a free kick against dangerfield. If that was Green, WW3 would start.

Carlton star Charlie Curnow drew level with Jeremy Cameron in the race for the Coleman Medal with two goals in the Blues’ loss to Adelaide.

But Cameron put a gap on Curnow with three goals in a row in a five-minute burst in the second quarter.

The 30-year-old slotted the eighth, ninth and tenth goals of his side’s game-defining run and added his fourth shortly before halftime.

Cameron didn’t register a goal in the second half as he, Tom Hawkins and Brad Close led the way in front of goal with four goals apiece.

The Cats will face their first big test since turning their season around next week when they take on the Sydney Swans in Geelong.
