THE TACKLE: BOMBER, HIRD SHOULD CO-COACH

THE TACKLE: DARK DEMONS, DOCKERS DEMOLTION

LIKES

1. THE TIGERS. Seven in a row and the Tigers’ bandwagon is filling rather quickly. All players contribute when victory is secured on the road, but there’s always special mentions. In no order of importance; Troy Chaplin, Ben Griffiths and Steve Morris were huge in the final quarter, with Morris’ one-on-one win against Eddie Betts crucial. The skipper was huge with eight touches in the final 30 minutes, Miles and Edwards laid three tackles each, and Deledio and Vlastuin didn’t stop running. And what a version of the song in the post-match.

2. THE BOMBERS. Could safely go Dyson Heppell for another best afield effort on the back of 16 final-quarter disposals, but similar to the Tigers it was the lesser lights which got Essendon over the line. Colyer’s run and 24 touches, Baguely’s goal-saving and rebounding and, of course, Winderlich’s switch from half-back to full-forward were critical. But why did he play on in third quarter?

3. CHRIS YARRAN. The beauty of opponents not wanting to leave their opponents means space is opened up and Yarran used every inch of it. His run away from Travis Varcoe and goal was as good as footy gets on Friday night. In a season of inconsistency, Yarran has played his best footy for the Blues. The one-time trade bait is at the centre of Carlton’s rebuild. One player who won’t be there is Jarrad Waite. Contract talks on hold means only one thing - goneski.

4. CAN’T LEAVE OUT BUDDY. Watched the game for one reason and he didn’t disappoint. Kicked nine and as much as the dancing, dodging ninth goal was playground fun, it was fourth goal which drew wonder. He swung it across his body from 45m while running parallel to the goals. There’s not a player in the competition other than him who could do that. He had 15 shots at goal for 9.4 and two out of bounds. Freak doesn’t quite cut it.

5. MATTHEW LOBBE. Stoppage game it was and the stoppage king of the ruckmen came to play. Sixteen disposals, a game-high 12 tackles, seven clearances, which was only second to teammate Robbie Gray with nine, and a staggering 56 hitouts made Lobbe the most influential player on the ground. Won’t make the All Australian - surely Sam Jacobs is a lock - but in Lobbe the Power have an All Australian in the making. Put it another way, and I reckon Nic Naitanui has a huge future, but if Nic Nat was getting Lobbe numbers, he would be hailed as the greatest thing since ... since Marcus Bontempelli.

6. DEVON SMITH. Hasn’t got to the level this season as we expected, yet his performance on Sunday tells us the graph is heading north. It was his second 30-plus disposal game of the season, but his game isn’t about numbers. He’s a line-breaker who has kicked 23 goals for the season and will be a formidable player along with Treloar, Kelly, Buntine, Shiel and Bugg had a breakout as well.

7. TACKLES. Three stood out. Courtney Dempsey in the final quarter against West Coast, Jed Adcock stopping Alan Toovey in his tracks at the MCG and Jeremy McGovern on Winderlich in the third quarter. Adcock typified Brisbane’s performance and his goal from the free kick was inspirational. It took the score to 57-33 and the Lions were rolling.

8. THE BRISBANE QUADRELLA. Rockliff, Hanley, Zorko and Martin just might be the in-form midfield in the competition. Rockliff we know is a star and this season an All Australian, Hanley might be the most improved midfielder in the league, Zorko is the electric avenue and Martin, well, what can you say about Martin. Had 32 disposals against the Pies, seven marks, three clearances and 27 hit outs. He is Dean Cox reincarnated. Don’t get pantsy, I didn’t say he was better or even as good at the same age as Cox, I’m saying he is the best ruckman/midfielder playing right now. Which makes the question about what to do with Matthew Leuenberger all the more intriguing.

9. ANDREW SWALLOW. Watched him closely since his return from the Achilles and he hasn’t been able to put together what I would say was a clinical Swallow performance. It came on Sunday against a team which likes coalface footy. Finished with 29, 11 tackles, 10 clearances and seven inside 50s and was clearly best afield.

10. THE HAYES SHOW. Well done Swans for the line of honour, Lenny deserves it.

Honourable Mentions: Caddy and Christensen, Jake Lloyd’s 10 marks and seven tackles, Parker’s heart, Prestia and Bennell, Robbie Gray cements All Australian, Hurn’s right foot, Mitch Brown’s courage, Jono Freeman’s four goals, Ellis yet again, Talia on Riewoldt, Martin forward at the death two weeks in a row, whoever stopped Brodie Smith, Darcy Gardiner’s fightback, Aaron Black finally, Ben Brown encouragingly, The Bont and all the history-making team from western Sydney.

DISLIKES

1. JON PATTON. Two reasons. Watching him scream in pain was painful to watch and the simple fact he will undergo his second knee reconstruction _ and he’s just 20. It is a cruel game, football. Don’t know whether to believe the Western Bulldogs had an offer in at 900k and if yes, then surely it’s off the table. Not that GWS was going to trade him anyway. What a blow on such triumphant day for the footy club.

2. MELBOURNE. This from Channel 7 guru, @js_kay, on twitter. “Five scores under 40 at the @MCG for @melbournefc in 2014 ... Haven’t done that in a single season since 1919.’’ There were countless tweets from dejected Melbourne fans, mostly emotional, but Kay’s tweet went to the heart. The Demons can’t kick goals and the pressure is on Paul Roos to rectify it. Where have the skills gone? Where’s the confidence? You can only hang your hat on defensive improvement for so long. Worse, even Paul Roos spoke of laying down. “It looks they put the cue in the rack,’’ he said.

3. COLLINGWOOD. Lost Elliott and Pendlebury before the game, Reid before the ball had been scuffed, then Cloke, then Beams, then their effort, then their heart and, in the end, their season. It was the perfect storm. So much so, president Ed announced the footy club will hold a fans’ forum so all the disenchanted fans can grill the coaches and executive about what’s gone wrong. Clearly, soft tissues are of major concern and the Pies have employed a world expert in the field to review the club’s training and weights programs.

4. THAT SAID. Collingwood put up the flag against the rampaging Lions. Would love to say it’s un-Collingwood-like but it’s twice in four weeks. The other performance (or lack of) coming against Essendon. Still not the time to hang Nathan Buckley. Youth does that. They lost top-end talent and the middle group isn’t ready to stand up just yet. Still, you’d like to see more fight and you’d like to see a little more ownership of opponents.

5. CARLTON WERE STIFFED. Twice this year. They were on the wrong end of a call against Geelong in Round 12 and lost by five points and on Friday night had a free kick given to Allen Christensen, only to have the umpires’ boss admit the next day the call was wrong. They are sliding door moments and the Cats wouldn’t be complaining. If the decisions were reversed, the Cats would be in fourth spot. And the Blues? They’d be two games better off but still in 13th position

6. WHERE’S THE RULE GONE? Talking about front-on contact below the knees and talking about Mathew Stokes sliding in low and into the knee of Dale Thomas. A free kick was paid to Stokes mind you. The rule was brought in to avoid knee injuries and while most, if not all, players have escaped injuries in similar situations this year, the occasion when a player is injured there’s no free kick.

7. WHY NO TAG ON ELLIS? Adelaide is not alone in letting Ellis run free because he seems to escape the attention from all clubs. His possessions in the past eight games read 31, 28, 34, 27, 29, 32, 36 and 35. Deledio has gone forward so a backman can take care of him, Cotchin still gets close attention, Miles is in and under, so who else is left. Ellis needs a tag pronto. At 21 and after 62 games, he looms as a Richmond’s equivalent to Sydney’s Dan Hannebery.

8. ON NOTICE. There’s a bunch of players treading water, some of whom who will play finals, some of whom won’t be at their club next year, and some of whom are playing ordinary footy. Short list includes Travis Varcoe, Jimmy Gwilt, Jaeger O’Meara, Chad Wingard, Brendon Goddard, Heritier Lumumba, Josh Jenkins, Stu Crameri and most everyone at Melbourne outside of Jones, Tyson and Vince.

9. GOAL REVIEW. As well as reviewing goals it is making me review my eye sight. Surely, Rory Sloane’s snap did not conclusively hit the post. Did it? Anyone believe it did other than the review umpire? Thought not.

10. DID I MENTION MELBOURNE? Just pathetic.
