Geelong College player Patrick Shirlow was sent to hospital with concussion in a freak accident during the Geelong school derby on Saturday afternoon.
The Year 11 student was tackled by Geelong Grammar star and Geelong Next Generation Academy prospect Ben Rongdit in the first quarter of Geelong College’s 53-point win.
Rongdit lunged to tackle and collided with the goalpost and fell to the ground as he held on to the tackle, with his momentum forcing Shirlow to fall backwards and hit his head on the turf.
It is understood Shirlow was resting at home on Sunday and feeling all right a day after the head knock.
The game was stopped for a prolonged period as Shirlow was surrounded by officials, parents and officials and taken off the ground on a stretcher before an ambulance was called.
It is understood the South Barwon junior was talking and responsive on the way to University Hospital.
Ambulance Victoria confirmed a teenage boy was taken to the University Hospital in Geelong on Saturday and was in a stable condition with upper body injuries.
Rongdit also sustained a cork to his leg from the tackle after colliding with the goalpost and came off the ground, but returned to the field soon after with strapping.
Shirlow’s blow soured Geelong College’s third-straight win over their arch rivals in front of a packed crowd at Geelong College, where Geelong Falcons bottom-ager Charlie Hanegraaf won the best-on-ground medal.
A second Geelong College player was stretchered from the field with a knee injury later in the match.
