Brandon Ryan to make Brisbane Lions debut against former side Hawthorn

Nine months after his last game as a Hawk, Brisbane will unleash Brandon Ryan on his old side in his first game as a Lion — will he put pressure on the suspended Eric Hipwood?

Brisbane will unleash 200cm key forward Brandon Ryan against Hawthorn in place of the suspended Eric Hipwood as the Lions look to snap a surprising four-game losing streak to Sunday’s opponents.

Ryan, 26, was taken by the Hawks in the 2023 mid-season draft and played three games for the brown and gold last season, including a three-goal outing against Collingwood.

The Barwon Heads product was then traded to Brisbane as part of the deal that sent Jack Gunston back to Hawthorn.

“It’s a pretty surreal feeling because I made my debut less than 12 months ago for the club we’re versing (sic) this weekend,” Ryan said ahead of his club debut.

“Definitely more excited than nervous. It’s special, a bit of a full circle moment as I also made my debut at Marvel (Stadium) with the Hawks. Now it’s at Marvel against them.

“The Lions have been one of the top teams for years now and have so many decorated names, so to be running out with those guys makes me feel very proud.”

Ryan has booted five goals in as many VFL games for the Lions so far this season. He gets his chance at AFL level after the club chose not to contest Hipwood’s one-game suspension for a dangerous tackle on Richmond defender Nick Vlastuin.

Ryan said he did not expect a hostile reception from his former teammates, given he “wasn’t there for every long”.

“I just want to go in and make sure I’m doing everything I can to play the role that’s needed and contribute to give the best chance of us winning,” he said.

“Fages (Chris Fagan) has been really good in the sense he hasn’t put any pressure on me and has just told me to keep it simple.

“He’s been very good of just making sure I’m ready to go and backs me in to play my role. All the coaches have prepared me really well.”

Brisbane has lost its past four matches against Hawthorn dating back to round one 2020.
