While the scores were lower than the AFL may have been hoping for there was no shortage of drama in Geelong and Adelaide.

Geelong's women's team made history in the season-opener by claiming its first win in the AFLW competition in a thriller against Collingwood.

Scores were level with less than three minutes to play when the Cats' No.1 draft pick Nina Morrison won a free kick 20m from goal. Her shot hit the post but it was enough to deliver an emotional win in front of 18,429 fans at GMHBA Stadium.

In the second match of tonight's double-header, reigning premiers the Western Bulldogs got their premiership defence off to a perfect start by outlasting an innacurate Adelaide at Norwood Oval. Katie Brennan was the star with two goals.
