AFL Round 9 team news: Sam Weideman receives call-up as Blues axe three

Melbourne forward Sam Weideman will play his first AFL game of the season, with a finger injury to emerging tall Luke Jackson opening the door for a call-up against Carlton on Sunday afternoon.

Sidelined during the pre-season with a stress fracture in his right leg, Weideman had been previously overlooked by the undefeated Demons despite a barnstorming start to the VFL season, kicking 14.6 in three VFL matches – including a haul of seven against Box Hill.

The Demons have dropped Jake Melksham, while the Blues have dumped trio Jack Newnes, Michael Gibbons and last week’s medical sub Sam Petrevski-Seton, with Jack Silvagni to miss with concussion.

Carlton has called on veteran Marc Murphy, Will Setterfield and Nic Newman, who comes in for his first senior game of 2021.

Essendon will be without Jake Stringer following his hamstring blow last week, while prized youngster Nik Cox has been managed, replaced by the out-of-favour David Zaharakis.

Cox, taken as a top 10 pick in last year’s draft has made a bright start to his career at Windy Hill, playing every game across the first eight rounds.

West Coast regain defensive pillars Jeremy McGovern and Tom Barrass for its clash with Adelaide, who will unveil debutant Ronin O’Connor.

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge named one of the best benches of all-time as part of a bizarre team line-up for its crunch clash with Port Adelaide on Saturday night.

Talented midfield quartet Marcus Bontempelli, Adam Treloar, Jack Macrae and Tom Liberatore were named to start on the pine according to the club’s team lodgement, while a number of other players are noticeably out of position.

AFL CELEBRATES RETURN OF THURSDAY NIGHT TEAMS

The AFL will bring back one of the great traditions – Thursday night teams – from Round 10, following weeks of backlash from fans.

The AFL acknowledged fans had been angered by the new system brought in during the COVID pandemic, where clubs named their teams the night before their game.

Historically, teams for the round were all named on Thursday night. Tipping and SuperCoach competitions were drastically affected by the new policy. But from next week, teams will be back.

Clubs were told about the change at a meeting today.

“Thursday night teams is a tradition for fans, tipsters, fantasy footy players and our league,” AFL chief Gill McLachlan said.

“Last year, we had to make some necessary changes to assist our clubs in getting through and part of that was moving the team announcements to combat the four or five day breaks we were faced with.

“After working through the feedback from fans and other stakeholders over the last few weeks, we conducted some further research and the decision to return to the traditional timeslot was an easy one.”
