AFL legend Matthew Richardson exposed as unseen footage comes to light

AFL legend Matthew Richardson has been brutally caught in a 30-year fib after previously unseen footage came to light.

Richmond great says former teammate is dead to him

Matthew Richardson’s biggest lie was exposed on Wednesday night thanks to previously unseen footage.

The Richmond legend appeared on Channel 7’s The Front Bar, replacing usual host Mick Molloy as he sat in the middle of Sam Pang and Andy Maher.

Richardson however quickly found himself in the hot seat as discussion turned to a moment the 282-gamer had previously bragged about.

The man affectionately known as “Richo” has spoken about a hanger he took in the opening round of the 1994 season against the Western Bulldogs.

“My memory of it is … in the goalsquare, it felt like a hanger. When you get up, you feel that lift. I did feel it, I got that lift, it felt like it was a good mark,” Richardson said as he recounted the moment.

Sam Pang added: “You said it was the greatest mark you’ve ever taken!”

“I feel like it was, but I’ve never seen it. I’ve never seen any vision of it. The game wasn’t broadcast, back then not all the games were broadcast,” Richardson replied.

“30 years in the making, I’ve never seen it.”

It was then that Richardson was informed the footage had been tracked down, a point that quickly left him squirming in his chair.

Footage began to roll and it’s fair to say it didn’t live up to the hype that Richardson had been spruiking for so long.

As the ball sailed towards the goals, Richardson leaves the ground and gets onto a Bulldogs defender before hauling in a chest mark on the goal line.

“Mate you took a chest mark in the goalsquare … what are you talking about?” Pang said bluntly.

Richo attempted to claim the mark didn’t look as good because of the grainy footage before offering up what he really thought of the moment.

“The modern cameras would have captured that better, where’s your 4K camera,” Richardson says with tongue firmly in cheek.

When asked what he thought of the vision he responded: “Nah it’s s***house. “I’ve been telling that story for 30 years.”

Richardson’s AFL career came to an end following the 2009 season, finishing with exactly 800 goals to his name.

Injuries cruelled his final season in the league with his final game coming in a round six loss to the Sydney Swans.

Since hanging up the boots, Richardson picked up the microphone and has grown into a key member of Channel 7’s commentary team.

He made waves on social media in June this year when he blew up after seeing former teammate Trent Cotchin wearing Brisbane Lions colours.

“That is not Trent Cotchin … what is going on? Everyone is leaving the Tigers, fair dinkum. That’s it, he’s dead to me Cotchin. I’ll never speak to him again.”
