Carlton will look to lock away Ashton Moir on a new deal soon as the talented forward comes out of contract this year.
Moir is one of only two top-30 draft picks from 2023 who are currently without a deal for 2026, alongside Sydney midfielder Caiden Cleary.
Melbourne has already secured Caleb Windor and Koltyn Tholstrup until 2028, while Gold Coast tall Ethan Read also has four more years to run on his current deal.
Five other players from the 2023 draft class have extended their deals until 2027.
Considered to be the steal of the 2023 draft at pick 29, Moir featured in two AFL games at the end of last season and has continued his development over the off-season.
“He’s put on a few kilos which you can see in his frame, coming into his first full pre-season, plus he’s running really well,” Carlton assistant coach Jordan Russell said recently.
“He’s showing signs of improvement as a potential hybrid tall option, continuing to work on his aerial game and bringing the ball to ground which is where his strengths are. He’s got some really good attributes – he’s full of energy, he’s powerful, reads the game well and can obviously kick with both feet.”
The top 20 picks from the 2023 national draft were the first group of players to sign mandatory three-year deals under a new collective bargaining agreement, while all remaining selections initially received standard two-year contracts.
The top-two picks from 2023 – West Coast’s Harley Reid and North Melbourne’s Colby McKercher – are yet to extend beyond 2026 and will wait until the season gets rolling before considering potential contract extensions.
Reid is set for a monster payday in 2027 as one of footy’s best young talents.
