Replay: Palmerston v PINT - 2025-26 NTFL Round 11

PINT have found their groove on top of the table rolling over the Palmerston Magpies to continue their winning momentum, despite a scrappy final term.

The Greenants travelled to Cazalys Arena already one win clear atop the ladder of the NTFL Premier League and despite the scrap proved too good against the side sitting on the opposite end.

PINT did struggle to find an entry in their early forays forward that they could make use of as Palmerston were able to disrupt and limit their scoring for much of the first quarter.

However, as the game wore on and particularly in the third quarter their midfield dominance and their accuracy when in with a shot told as they ran out the 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57) winners.

The PINT midfield took early dominance with Connor McDonald with another strong ruck game while Thomas Schwarzenberg had a more than notable outing.

As mentioned the early forays came to naught with even a Benjamin Smyth set shot cut off just before the posts by an uncontested mark that pointed to strong Magpies defence.

In fact, Palmerston were somehow the first side to find their route to goal as they worked the ball down their end and Harry Bremner struck true.

PINT got theirs soon after with a Jak Trewin snap and Jye Barry ensured that the earlier efforts were rewarded with a quarter time lead.

Palmerston’s ill-discipline did play a role in their undoing as they gave away needless free kicks and 50s, including one for the lethal Noah Spiteri’s first of five goals.

Murphy Short and Cameron Wilson played important roles in the midfield getting their own push forward while Archie Stevens and James Rowe also enjoyed typically strong outings.

The pressure coming out of that midfield showed in a run of nine goals in the middle section of the match, without interruption from even a behind that tore the game away from Palmerston.

Short with his breezing runs got two to his name in that period while Spiteri continued his dominance that has him well among the top scorers of the season.

Palmerston’s Jayden Davey at times appeared to be the lone chance for his side to scrape back some hope while Joel Munnich and Jordan Clyne were among those trying to create.

But it wasn’t until the final term when PINT sort of eased off that Palmerston were able to claw back some of the 53-point three quarter time deficit.

The Greenants let off the pressure in the evening humidity and the Magpies took their chances for goals to Harri Armstrong and Heath Morgan-Morris.

An elongated brawl broke out around the Palmerston goal square that included ripped jerseys and those final moments would probably be the only cause for concern for the PINT coaches.

Otherwise, it was another dominant win ahead of their big pre-Christmas test against Nightcliff next round.

“The pressure from the forwards and mids was up and when they’re cracking further up the field it makes everyone’s jobs a whole lot easier,” Short said.

“After half time is where we got our break, our pressure was up and they didn’t really have any time with the ball and couldn’t chip through us with everyone manning off so well.

“That made life for the defenders easier and we could pick through them easier up the ground and get our forwards some clean shots on goal.

“We’re looking good at the moment, focusing on ourselves and know that if we bring our style we can compete with everyone, we just have to rock up with the right attitude and crack in.

“It’s been great fun with this great bunch of boys here, including the reserves, everyone gets along which makes life easier and we’re led by a great coach (Mark Whiley) who runs a right ship.”

PREVIEW

PINT and Palmerston find themselves on opposite ends of the NTFL ladder after 10 rounds, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to play for here.

The Greenants will be gunning for a percentage boosting win while Palmerston want their maiden victory of the season, particularly on their home deck at Cazalys Arena.

Every moment of the match will be streamed live and free from 8pm on Friday by The NT News and KommunityTV as part of our season-long NTFL coverage.

WHY TO WATCH

PINT have dropped just one match this season, against reigning premiers Southern Districts, and are in a rare position of sitting atop the premier league ladder.

They saw off the big challenge of Waratah last round, but this week presents a different task in maintaining their form against a lower-ranked side ahead of next week’s meeting with Nightcliff.

Connor McDonald and former Adelaide Crow James Rowe are two of the form players in the competition, with their prowess in the midfield having a big influence on a number of contests this season.

Cameron Wilson is another ball winner who has gone from strength to strength in the past couple of weeks, while Noah Spiteri has 13 goals from his four matches.

PINT’s defence has been just as impressive, led by skipper Brad Ryan, which has only conceded more points than one side, that being St Mary’s who have had one extra bye.

That’s the challenge for Palmerston, a side that have yet to post a win despite some more passionate showings in recent weeks.

Prior to their bye, the Magpies pushed the Buffaloes all the way, even going ahead at once stage, despite being behind by 20 points in the first half.

It was a similar story against Tiwi a few weeks earlier with the developing outfit allowing an early deficit that left them too much to do when they got back in the game.

Jayden Davey and Alwyn Davey were standouts against the Buffaloes in the Magpies last outing, while Heath Morgan-Morris presented as a strong scoring option.
