OKAY, all you haters out there. Taylor Swift starts her Aussie tour tonight in Sydney. And here are seven reasons we love her.
She really can, like, sing
Just a quick looks at the stats, people. Seven Grammys. Three consecutive albums at the top of the Billboard charts. Seventy five millions digital downloads. Packed arenas. A gazillion views on Youtube. And none of that takes into account the endless times Fifteen or You Belong With Me will wail through your head on JUST. ONE. LISTEN.
Heaps of stars are happy to take to the stage with her - just ask J-Lo or Ed Sheeran or Ellie Goulding, or Def Leppard (seriously). Or the Victoria's Secret Angels (except Jessica Hart, obv).
Oh, or Prince William.
She really can, like, dress
The long, flowy frocks. The cute shorts. The flirty sun dresses. The wholesome country girl sepia-shoot thing. The hippy with guitar thing. She just never gets in wrong. (Except maybe the pork pie hat. Still not 100 per cent on that).
Vogue, Maria Claire and best-dressed-on-the-red-carpet lists ad nauseam are backing me up here.
She really, like, sticks it to her exes
How would you feel if you were the subject of a song. That went triple platinum. That included the lyrics:
"And you would hide away and find your peace of mind
With some indie record that's much cooler than mine."
I mean, it does make Jake Gyllenhaal sound like a complete wanker, doesn't it? I'd never, ever get back together with him either.*
She sticks it to people who aren't her exes**
Teensy weensy tatt board Justin Bieber got on Swifty's bad side when he mooched up to his ex, Taylor's friend Selena Gomez, at the Billboard Music Awards this year. Taylor could have held back. She could have said nothing.
But she didn't. Instead, she stuck out her tongue for the world to see at the erkiness of it. Beebs hit back with the song All Bad. But no one took much notice.
She's the only person who's ever been out with someone who was part werewolf AND shared her first name
Twilight's Taylor Lautner. Three months. But it still qualifies.
She has a sense of humour
The world and his mate will never forget the moment, in 2009, when Kanye West told the world Beyonce, not Taylor, should have won the MTV VMA for Best Female Video.
So when Ed Sheeran was nominated for a VMA, she sent him a jar of jam with the label:
"Yo Ed - I'm really happy 4 you and I'm gonna let you finish, but this is the best JAM OF ALL TIME. - T"
And she's been voted the person most likely to write a song about her ex, so her You're So Vain duet with Carly Simon was a masterstroke. Join in now … "I bet you think this song is about you, don't you, don't you …"
And she's even done a shout-out to all those dads who'll be yawning in the crowd when she performs in Sydney tonight.
She dated a Kennedy
Everyone, including Taylor, has dated John Mayer. But seriously, how many have made the trip to Hyannis Port?
She wears her heart on her sleeve
When she's surprised, she looks surprised. When's she delighted, she looks delighted.
So should we really be amazed that, given she's still a bit cut up about the breakup with One D's Harry Styles, she's not averse to letting everyone know.
At the 2013 VMAs (global audience: more than 10 million) One D took to the stage. Taylor's response? "Shut the f$%k up." Well, heartbreak does burn deep.
And later the same night, cradling one of the awards, she had another go: "I also want to thank the person who inspired this song (I Knew You Were Trouble) and he knows exactly who he is, because I got me one of these."
Go Swifty!
Music writer Kathy McCabe will be at Taylor Swift's concert tonight. Come back to read her (probably a bit more balanced) review.
*As far as we know
**Okay, I accept he'd probably never ask me out in the first place. But you know what I mean.
