Donald and Ivanka... Awkward much?

Did anyone see Presidential nominee Donald Trump on the Republican all-singing, all-dancing spruiking stage this week getting cosy with daughter Ivanka?

Eww, and double eww. If he got any closer I’d have called the cops.

Wearing her own label’s $158 dress, Ivanka spruiked her father’s feminist credentials to the cheering crowd at the Republican National Convention and its 23 million TV audience.

Ivanka endorsed her father’s support of hiring and promoting women in his many companies, asserting that he had more female executives than male and that women were equally paid compared to men.

“He will fight for equal pay for equal work. I will fight for it too right alongside of him,” she said.

We all know how The Donald likes his women: blonde, pretty and slim. He pours scorn on women with strong opinions, especially women called Hillary or Megyn. Give him a malleable blonde and he’s happy, even if the blonde is his own his daughter.

This is a man who also went on national television in 2006 to tell the world he wouldn’t mind dating Ivanka.

When asked on the American talk show The View what he would do if Playboy put Ivanka on the cover, he replied: “I don’t think Ivanka would do that... although she does have a very nice figure. I’ve said that if Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps, I would be dating her.”

That’s right: if only for that little troublesome fact of being her father, Donald Trump would ask her out.

When asked on US chat show Wendy in 2013 what he had in common with his daughter, he said: “sex”.

What is it with Trump and women? Who can forget how upset he got during his 2015 interview with Fox’s Megyn Kelly, who asked him if calling women “fat pigs, dogs, slobs, and disgusting animals” was behaviour befitting a president. You could practically see the steam coming out of his ears.

Kelly was referring to his 2006 outburst against actor and comedian Rosie O’Donnell, who had criticised him. Trump said of her: “Rosie O’Donnell is disgusting — both inside and out. If you take a look at her, she’s a slob. How does she even get on television? If I were running The View, I’d fire Rosie. I’d look her right in that fat, ugly face of hers and say, ‘Rosie, you’re fired.’ We’re all a little chubby but Rosie’s just worse than most of us. But it’s not the chubbiness — Rosie is a very unattractive person, both inside and out.”

When Kelly called him on it, he turned on her, saying in the following days that she was not only “unprofessional” but aggressive. He told a CNN reporter “... she starts asking me all sorts of ridiculous questions. You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her whatever.”

Surely there’s a contradiction inherent in a man who professes to be a supporter of equal pay, whose daughters insist he is not a misogynist, who clearly believes that beauty — above all — is the greatest attribute a woman can possess? He told shock jock Howard Stern when Ivanka was 22 how proud he was to “help create” one of the great beauties of the world: “She’s six feet tall, she’s got the best body.”

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the possible next president of the United States. You have been warned.
