Police have warned sticky beaks, urban explorers and vandals to stay away from Queensland’s largest mental health facility after a spike in trespassing offences.

More than 20 people were charged with trespassing after being caught attempting to enter heritage listed buildings at the Wolston Park Hospital Complex last month.

The 450 hectare site, on the banks of the Brisbane River at Wacol, houses a number of public health institutions including The Park Centre for Mental Health which currently accommodates 148 patients.

Mount Ommaney acting officer in charge Sergeant Paul Hauff said trespassing had been a long-running problem at the site.

He said 12 people were charged on October 24 and another nine on October 31 after being caught attempting to enter the old female ward.

WACOL’S HAUNTED HOUSE

“The building is in a state of disrepair and we’re concerned because people could get seriously injured,” Sgt Hauff said.

“There are clear signs indicating you should not be in there and the building is fenced with barbed wire”

Sgt Hauff said social media had fuelled interest in the building which has been referred to as the haunted house of Wacol.

“People decide to come out and have a look but don’t realise what they’re doing is illegal and dangerous,” he said.

“It’s not structurally sound.”

Sgt Hauff said the operational mental health facilities added additional safety concerns.

“The grounds still house mental health patients and includes a secure unit,’ he said.

“If you try and get in, security and police will treat it as if people were trying to break into the prison.”

Sgt Hauff said police and security patrols would be increased.

“It’s private property, it’s not safe and you will be charged.
