Two spots Council needs to consider for new bridge

A survey has revealed two surprising locations westside residents say would be ideal for Council’s proposed fifth “green’’ bridge.

Council wanting feedback on new 'green bridges'

An online survey of westside Brisbane residents has revealed two surprising choices for Council’s long-awaited fifth “green’’ bus-cycle-pedestrian bridge.

When asked if Council should build a bridge from Fig Tree Pocket to Sherwood, 95 per cent of Tennyson ward residents (250 people) agreed. The ward takes in Sherwood, Graceville and Chelmer.

But when asked where else outside the ward a fifth green bridge was needed, Rocks Riverside Park in Jindalee, connecting with Fig Tree Pocket, came out on top as the most popular location (11 mentions).

Council earlier this year scrapped its fifth bridge location, Bellbowrie to Wacol, after a massive backlash from Bellbowrie-area residents.

It is still considering an alternative.

The bridges were the first major policy announcement of Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner after he took over the city’s top job from former Lord Mayor Graham Quirk.

Tennyson Councillor Nicole Johnston revealed the survey results today.

She shared a link to the survey via community Facebook groups for the suburbs of Chelmer, Graceville, Sherwood, Corinda and Oxley between August 26 and September 7.

Cr Johnston said although the survey showed strong interest in another bridge, she had argued there were higher priorities such as footpaths, safer roads and bikeways.

The next most popular location outside Tennyson ward was Toowong to West End (total of 10 responses), where Council is already committed to building a green bridge.

Corinda to Oxley Creek Common (8) and Long Pocket to Tennyson (7) were other popular responses.

“Facebook comments indicated that some residents would prefer to see funding allocation for a traffic bridge (4 comments) or ferry service,’’ she said.

“Another suggestion was that residents would like a riverwalk between Rocks Riverside Park and the Sherwood Arboretum.’’

Some of your Facebook comments on a fifth green bridge:

— “If there is an opportunity, I think it would be great to bag a green bridge for our stretch of the river (I live in Sherwood) and to take cars off the road by enabling quicker travel times by bike or on foot.

— “If there was a bridge to get from Sherwood to Fig Tree Pocket to access Lone Pine, or a walkway around the river like they have at New Farm, that would be awesome.”

— “ I literally just googled whether there was a ferry service across to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary from Sherwood Arboretum yesterday and was musing that a footbridge would be a great idea.”
