Seven westside schools are among a Council hit list of 60 primary schools and colleges which will be targeted by parking inspectors.

Indooroopilly, Kenmore South, Milton, Pullenvale and The Gap state schools, Kelvin Grove State College and St Peters Lutheran College in Indooroopilly are on the hit list for term one.

The news comes after figures showing three westside schools made it to the top 10 for most parking fines last year.

Corinda State High had the third highest number of fines (24) in the Brisbane area in term three in 2019, with Pullenvale State School (23) in fifth spot and Indooroopilly State High (22) in sixth spot.

Somerville House in South Brisbane topped the list with 83 fines.

Deputy Mayor Krista Adams cited safety concerns and complaints as the reason for the crackdown, which has become an annual feature of the back-to-school calendar.

“We want nothing more than to see our residents be able to travel safely,” Ms Adams said.

The council said last year it received 1100 complaints about illegal and dangerous parking around Brisbane schools.

The council said the enforcement was to “raise awareness” of safe travel and boost safety.

“The simple visible reminder of seeing an officer is extremely effective in reminding people to park safely and legally around schools,” Cr Adams said.

“I understand school pick up and drop off can be busy, but dropping off children where it is unsafe is just not acceptable.”

The schools were chosen based on self-nomination by the school or identified by the council as needing extra patrols to boost safety.

But all of the seven westside schools are in crowded urban areas where there is extremely limited street parking.

Westside News has previously exposed the problems on Grandview Rd, where Pullenvale State School parents have been stung with fines for many years for pulling into a bus bay that is rarely used.

Grandview Rd is choked with traffic during school pick-ups and there is only one small off-street parking lot.

Parents are faced with a choice of risking a fine and parking illegally or parking several hundred metres from the school gates.

Those with small children said they were reluctant to let them walk so far by themselves on a busy road.
