Supermarket defends break up of bulk toilet paper packs

A supermarket in Brisbane’s north says its decision to break up bulk packs of toilet paper will allow more households to purchase the sought-after product. But customers claim otherwise.

Toilet paper panic: Shoppers start stockpiling over coronavirus fears

AN independent supermarket has defended its decision to break up bulk packs of toilet paper following a complaint during these “unprecedented times”.

IGA Brighton owner Kerry Sheaff said, on the store’s Facebook page, they had received a complaint from a customer about the way they were selling toilet paper in lots of four.

“They said we were stockpiling,” he wrote.

“The reason we are doing this is because on our deliveries we are receiving 24 and 48 packs (of toilet rolls).

“If we put these on the shelf and sell them then that only looks after one household.

“If we split them into four packs then we can allow a lot more customers to get toilet paper.

“I am more than happy to put the bulk packs on the shelf as it is a lot less work for us, we are just trying to help.”

The store also no longer has straws on the counter for use with drinks “as we had another customer complain that it is a health issue and that she would take it further if we didn’t remove them”.

Mr Sheaffalso wrote he had noticed complaints from customers on social media because the store was not running specials.

“We do not have catalogues in store and none have been distributed.

“We are not running specials as we can’t get the stock and then when we do receive the stock we don’t get a special buy on it.

“We have run all catalogue specials and over and above specials since I have owned the store for 15 years.

“These are unprecedented times and there is no play book for us to follow. We are doing our best in trying to provide a service to our community and to keep everyone safe.

“So if you do shop in our store, please accept we are doing our best under the circumstances and if you feel you need to be a total dick you are more than welcome to shop elsewhere.”
