Police on Brisbane’s southside say offenders are continuing to break into homes for the purpose of stealing vehicle keys, which they say are all too often left in visible, accessible places inside.

This was illustrated all too well for two families at Runcorn and Robertson, who had vehicles stolen in this manner in the past two days, according to Upper Mount Gravatt Police Station OIC Snr Sgt Murray Crone.

About 1am on Sunday, residents of an address at Didbrook St, Robertson were woken by a loud bang to discover someone had broken in by removing a flyscreen window and stolen the keys to their Toyota Camry which had been left on the kitchen bench.

The residents ran outside and disturbed the offender who had crashed their car into the front fence, before leaving the damaged car and decamping the scene on foot.

The offender was described to police as female, heavy build with dark skin, wearing a tracksuit.

In an unrelated incident, sometime between 10pm last night and 6am this morning, an unknown offender or offenders broke into an address at Daffodil Pl, Runcorn by forcing a security screen on a window.

Shockingly, residents were at home at the time and asleep.

The offender(s) pocketed two sets of keys which were in plain sight in the living room and stole a white Jeep Grand Cherokee and white Holden Colorado which are still missing.

“Police have increased patrols in the areas and encourage residents to secure their homes and vehicles and report any suspicious activity night and day,” Snr Sgt Crone said.

To help avoid incidents like these, Snr Sgt Crone recommended:

• Locking all doors and security screens – including garage doors.

• Locking or securing all windows, especially those without security screens.

• Storing keys in a secure location and removing all spare motor vehicle keys from your motor vehicle.

• Removing all property from your motor vehicle.

• Ensuring your motor vehicle is locked and secured.

• Reporting all offences and suspicious behaviour to Policelink on 131 444.
