The owner of a Logan shopping centre which shoppers describe as in sore need of an upgrade plans to do just that, lodging a development application which would see the expansion of anchor tenants and include a new outdoor dining precinct.
Chin Hong Investments Pty Ltd, the owner of Springwood Mall Shopping Centre at Fitzgerald Ave, submitted the application late last month.

Among the proposed improvements included in the designs include:
- Introducing a new dining precinct along the north front of the shopping centre facing Fitzgerald Ave.
- Expanding the existing Woolworths tenancy to include a drive-through parcel pick-up facility.
- Expanding the existing BWS tenancy.
- Reclaiming part of the Target tenancy to include a new commercial tenancy and a new ‘mini-major’ tenancy (think JB Hi-Fi, Dymocks, Rebel Sport etc).
- Expanding the centre to allow for additional tenancies.
The proposal is to deliver the DA over two stages, with the new dining precinct comprising the second stage.
In a report, consultants Town Planning Alliance say there will also be a “contemporary upgrade to the existing shopping centre facade and entry statements”.
“The proposed design will enhance the amenity of the shopping centre and improve internal activation and offering through the provision of a new dining precinct,” they said.
Springwood Mall is currently anchored by Woolworths and Target and includes 45 tenancies, although at least half a dozen are currently vacant, including the former Suzanne Grae, Supercuts and Flight Centre stores, all of which were battered heavily by the winds of COVID-19.
Shoppers spoken to by the Courier Mail described Springwood Mall as dilapidated and paling in comparison to Arndale Shopping Centre across the road.
“You go to any shopping centre now, they’re all so much more well done,” Springwood woman Aleisha Moss said.
“It’s dead, you can’t get what you’re looking for,” Bethania woman Betty Munro said.
Husband Arthur went further, describing it as a “dump”.
“You’ve only got to look at the empty shops,” he said.
“It doesn’t make sense to expand if you can’t fill what you’ve got.”
Logan City Council is considering the proposal.
