Video of a massive carpet snake crawling off the roof of a southeast Queensland house has gone viral on TikTok.
But a veteran snake catcher reckons he’s seen even bigger and scotched comments that the reptile stretched 5m from end to end.
The largest verified coastal carpet python seen in the region measured 3.9m from head to tail.
Brisbane North Snake Catchers and Relocation’s Steven Brown estimated the specimen captured on video, which has been “liked’’ nearly one million times and “forwarded’’ 220,000 times around the world, was just over 3m long.
Comments such as “only in Australia’’ and “I’m cancelling my Australian holiday’’ were among the remarks from astounded viewers overseas.
Jessie commented on TikTok: “Carpet snake? Is that not an anaconda?’’
Mr Brown said very fat carpet pythons such as the one in the video appeared to be longer than in reality.
“I think it would have been 3m. No way would that have been over 3.5m,’’ he said.
“I got one the other day that was 3.2m.’’
He said it was not a scrub python, which grew to 5m, as some people had suggested.
Some were much fatter than others, particularly after a meal.
Snake catchers have reported many more call-outs at the moment as the days warmed up and snakes began their breeding season.
