Shoppers have just a few more weeks to snap up bargains at The Reject Shop at Orion Springfield Central.

Company secretary Michael Freier confirmed the Springfield store, in the Woolworths Mall, would be shutting its doors for good.

“After serving the Springfield community for the last 15 years, unfortunately the landlord has determined that The Reject Shop at Springfield needs to close shortly,” Mr Freier said.

The store’s last day will be Thursday, June 16.

Mr Freier confirmed all team members would relocate to nearby stores.

An Orion Springfield Central spokeswoman said while management was saddened to see The Reject Shop go, they were thrilled to welcome discount variety store Hot Bargain.

There was no word yet on when the new store would open.

“(We) can confirm The Reject Shop will close its doors in a few weeks when the current lease agreement has ended,” the spokeswoman said.

“We continue to evolve our retail offer to best meet the ever-changing needs of our local community and valued customers, and look forward to welcoming some other great brands to the centre later this year, including Dangerfield and Platypus Shoes.

“We thank The Reject Shop for being a fantastic part of the Orion community over the past years.”

Local shoppers, however, were not impressed by the demise of The Reject Shop.

Jill Trigg, 82, told Springfield News residents were very shocked.

“I was concerned for all the friendly, helpful staff,” Ms Trigg said.

“Numerous stores have been closing, (it’s) really sad to see. I understand the leases are very high.

“All businesses have suffered these past few years due to Covid.”

Others have since taken to social media to share their disappointment.

“I like The Reject Shop … sad to see it go,” one local posted.

Another shocked shopper added: “Wow. They will be missed.”

“Very sad to read that,” another said.

“If The Reject Shop can‘t afford the rent, what hope does a small business have.’’

The news comes just four months after The Reject Shop in Everton Park closed, to be replaced by a Silly Solly’s soon.

Mr Freier said that store was shut for the same reason.

“Unfortunately, we could not agree on an acceptable commercial outcome with the landlord at Everton Park and the store closed, with team members relocated to nearby stores,’’ he said.

“In our half year results announcement in February, we indicated that we would renegotiate 145 leases during (this financial year).

“If acceptable commercial terms cannot be agreed with landlords, The Reject Shop intends to close stores that are unprofitable or do not meet financial benchmarks.

“The Reject Shop’s purpose is to help all Australians save money every day, and we would like to welcome everyone to shop at our new store at Town Square Redbank Plains (opening June 2) or our existing store at Redbank Plaza.

“The Reject Shop continues to look for new locations where it can more conveniently serve more Australians.”
