The rare appearance of not one, but two eight-wicket hauls by bowlers has dominated discussions around this week’s KFC Queensland Premier Cricket Team of the Week.

Even more remarkably both bowlers finished with the same bowing figures.

While his Queensland Bulls teammates were winging their way west to prepare for their Sheffield Shield clash with fellow heavyweights Western Australia at the WACA, Bryce Street was the unlikely destroyer with the ball for University of Queensland.

Street, a right-arm medium-pacer, is gearing up to resume in the Bulls line-up when Test players Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne are on international duty.

His efforts to help dismiss Toombul for 141 at WEP Harris Oval could see him ask to be considered as an all-rounder in future selections in the wake of his unbeaten double century for the Students a few weeks ago.

Bowling first change, Street removed both openers and then proceeded to claim a flurry of wickets on the way to finishing with 8-48 from 22.3 overs.

While that was going on, Sandgate-Redcliffe fifth grade opening bowler Clinton Andersen was on the way to taking 8-48 from 20.1 overs against Wynnum-Manly. The Sea Eagles though had their own trump with schoolboy all-rounder Nick Bragger hitting 102 from 95 balls batting at number seven to lift them to 263 at Dixon Oval.

Back in first grade, Norths benefited from a boundary-laden Josh Brown century against competition frontrunners Gold Coast as they accumulated 7-327 at Ian Healy Oval.

Brown hammered 126 from 128 balls including seven sixes to increase his status as the overall leading runs-scorer with 738 runs in the top grade, encompassing the KFC T20 Max, Kookaburra One Day and Sci-Fleet Motors two-day competitions.

His strike-rate was eclipsed by South Brisbane opener Logan Duval who pounded 104 not out from 86 balls including 17 fours and four sixes against Sandgate-Redcliffe as the Magpies flew to 0-161 after dismissing the Gators for 207.

The highest score of the weekend in the men’s competition was 152 not out by Sandgate-Redcliffe third-grader Steven Hogan against Wynnum-Manly.

It was one of seven centuries scored across the grades on Saturday, including a pair of limited overs under -19 tons, as well as a 99 by Wynnum-Manly first grade captain Corey Hunter against Ipswich at Bichel Oval at Laidley.

Bowlers had their day though. As well as the two ‘8-fa’s’; two other bowlers claimed six wicket hauls and there were a further 10 five-wicket returns across the entire weekend of Premier Cricket.

Lord’s Taverners Team of the Week

Connor Walker (Darling Downs): Walker had a poised innings as opener, shining bright in an underwhelming team batting effort. Walker was dismissed one run short of his half-century but his patience at the increase in the face of wickets falling was admirable.

Mathew Fielding and Kane Neilson (Sandgate-Redcliffe): Opening batsman Fielding and Neilson set the tone in their run chase, scoring 33 and 39 respectively. Feilding hit a quick 30 while Neilson had a steady knock, both making the chase look easy. In the end, their team had no trouble chasing 155 thanks to their partnership.

Jamie Diggles (Sunshine Coast): Could Diggles have had a better knock to set the tone for his team? No chance. 67 runs off 103 deliveries proved the difference, with the batters that followed getting starts but falling cheaply. His knock gave the Sunny Coast boys just enough runs to defend.

Abhimanyu Yadav (UQ): Yadav gave it his all, scoring 46 off 62 opening the batting. He would have had the Sunny Coast boys praying for his wicket and once he was dismissed UQ’s chances of winning diminished.

Kurt Bass (Sunshine Coast): Had Bass not been there to take three poles, the result would have been different. The young gun led from the front with two early wickets and then another in his second spell. He led the way for Talon Weichert and Ben Baker who took three and two wickets respectively.

Sohaan Sharma and Jacob Cibulka (Western Suburbs): Sharma had an unbeaten 60 while Cibulka catapulted his way to 40. A pretty good day out for the No.7 and No.7 batter wouldn’t you say? They steered the ship all the way to 202 runs but somehow Valley had the answer.

Luke Ward and Harry Frost (Valley): The one thing Valley didn’t need was a top order collapse. And, as calm as ever, these two delivered exactly what they had to — 34 and 38 runs. Had they fallen quickly, then who knows what the pressure would have done to those down the order.

Tighe Morris and James Brandon (Valley): Jeez these two just took it to another level after the foundation was put in place by a cracking opening partnership. Morris had a steady 39 while Brandon showed his intent with a wonderful 56. With a gutsy win here, Valley are really starting to hit their stride, sitting pretty on the ladder now in third place.

Kori Ramsden and Joseph Sippel (Ipswich): You can almost guarantee a win when your openers put on a clinic like these two did. Ramsden had 55 while Sippel had 70. The runs kept flowing with first change batsman Kade Martin throwing in 34. The Gold Coast bowlers simply had no answer for the class of this in form trio.

Ramsden wasn’t content with his batting performance so he followed up his fifty with a ‘fourfa,’ leading the charge, bowling the Gold Coast boys out for 115.

Alexander Procopis (Northern Suburbs): Procopis went for 40 runs off his 10 overs but took four wickets in that time. And, they were big wickets too. He also scored a quick 21 off 28 at No.3 but was undone by an unbeatable Kavith De Silva ball.

Thisaja Samarawickrama (South Brisbane): Taking the scalp of his opposition’s opener really set the tone for his side. But, it was his economical 3/16 figures off nine overs which really impressed. He bowled two maidens on South Brisbane’s way to a 35-run victory.

Lachlan Heycox (Wide Bay): At No.8, Heycox’s 36 run effort won his team the game. Although Wide Bay batted first, his knock at the end of the innings gave his side just enough runs to defend (169).

Jackson Steinhardt (Wynnum-Manly): This young gun just keeps scoring runs. On Sunday, he scored 33 in a hurry, hitting four 4’s and a 6. Opener Liam Johns scored 38 as well however Wynnum-Manly’s fell agonisingly short by seven runs.

Clancy Muniandy (Wynnum-Manly): Muniandy undid Wide Bay’s opening three batsmen. It’s safe to say he was unplayable. Look no further than his figures of 4/26 off 10.

Rowan Grant and Luke Franks (Redlands): Grant and Franks had the Toombul batters on a string in the early going. Taking two wickets apiece, this duo did their job to perfection.

Clancy Brady (Redlands): Brady’s 44 run knock won his team the game. 100 runs sounds like an easy chase but that couldn’t be further from the truth when Nikhil Sharma has the ball in hand. Brady was eventually undone by Sharma but he stood tall to make it as easy as possible for the batters down the order to finish the job — only just.

Nikhil Sharma (Toombul): Sensational Sharma surely had Redlands players one through 11 all padded up at one point in time. The one man team bowled tremendously and was awfully close to carrying Toombul to a win. He took five wickets, and only went at 2.4 an over. But, 100 runs just wasn’t enough to defend.

In the women’s KFC T20Max clashes, University of Queensland enjoyed a win over Wynnum-Manly (79) after a splendid team bowling performance which included Gillian Chambers taking 3-1.

Around her the bowling unit of Schewie (2-15), Bloxsom (2-17), Craven (1-15) and a tight spell from Ruby Strange (0-16).

In the Uni innings of 6-113, Chambers shone with 27 not out (25 balls) to be one of the first chosen in our Team of the Week, while Emma Jackson (25) set a standard at the top of the order.

The Valley bowlers were also in commanding bowling form, with Sianna Ginger (4-4) and Eleanor Swamepoel (3-13) presenting commanding figures.

They were protecting Valley’s total of 9-120 which was underpinned by Mikayla Hinkley’s run-a-ball 50. Valley won by 93 runs despite a big bowling effort from Wests’ Ashleigh Sims (1-13, four overs).

In another low scoring game Sandgate Redcliffe had a 10 wicket win over Ipswich as Sophie Martin (2-8), Darcy Johnson (1-6, three overs) and Olivia Roche (0-6, three overs) tied their opponents in knots early.

Sunshine Coast pair Georgie Boyce (40) and Tarah Staines (32) had a ball with their contributions, effort which batted them into our Team of the Week.

This was despite the Gold Coast’s Tara Wheeler challenging hard with the ball and bat (2-11, 34).
