Brisbane Roar FC boy wonders; stunning Joeys’ schoolboy among 60 of the best featured in our top junior footballers of South East Queensland story.

The elevation of elite schoolboys Quinn MacNicol and Rylan Brownlie into the Brisbane Roar’s Isuzu UTE A-League Season squad highlights just some of the outstanding teen talent in Queensland.

In this story we highlight that pair, along with other rising rookie talents in a code brimming with sporting high achievers.

Club: Brisbane Roar

Position: Midfielder

Quinn MacNicol has made history for Brisbane Roar FC as the club’s youngest-ever player to make his senior debut. The 15-year-old Academy product from the famous Rochedale Rovers FC system, he is on a scholarship contract for the Isuzu UTE A-League Season.

Position: Striker

Another Brisbane Roar scholarship player, the striker follows in the footsteps of his striking father Royce. A Year 11 student at Nudgee College, Brownlie was a Under 17 Joey’s Australian squad member this season.

Isiah Quinn

Club: Brisbane Roar

Position: Defender or midfielder

A under 16 Joeys’ team member in 2022, Quinn is technical, athletic and has terrific acceleration and a strong work ethic. A real student of the game, Quinn has a reputation for being respectful and a positive influence on others around him at Marsden SHS.

Edward Ince

Club: Brisbane Roar

Position: Attacker

A Moreton Bay United and Pine Hills FC junior, Ince was the only Queenslander who made the final under 17 Joeys side this season. Ince first caught the eye of Roar talent scouts as an under 12 player at Moreton Bay United when he was invited to join the club’s under 13 academy in 2019. What a talent this St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace student is.

Club: Brisbane Roar FC

Position: Attacker

A 2022 under 16 Joey squad member, Malsawmkima has roared through the junior ranks playing for Logan Lightning FC and now finds himself as a Brisbane Roar scholarship player for the 2023-24 season. He is a The Groves Christian College old boy who aspires to play World Cup football.

Position: Central midfielder

A Year 11 student at Nudgee College whose bread and butter is moving the ball forward under pressure. He was also an Under 17 Joey’s Australian Squad member.

Position: Defender

A Brisbane Roar scholarship player for the 2023-24 season, Moya was a 2022 under 16 Joey squad member who originally came through the Southside Eagles system.

A Kelvin Grove State College product originally from Cairns, 18-year-old Waddington has fast-tracked his development playing against the men in the Brisbane Roar NPL Men’s team and as a result earned an A-League scholarship deal with the club. He has been a Joeys contender and is a former Queensland Schoolboys representative.

Lachlan Duke

Club: Brisbane Roar

Position: Goalkeeper

Duke comes from a high class pedigree his father, Daniel Duke, played National Soccer League also as a goalkeeper for the Brisbane Strikers. Lachlan, a The Southport School old boy, has been a keeping prodigy in the junior ranks, and is learning his craft within the Roar.

Club: Brisbane Roar

Position: Defender

From that rich sporting region of Bundaberg, Across The Waves junior Geyer could hardly have been more impressive as a teen, including raising the eyebrows of Young Socceroos coach Trevor Morgan who had him in his training squad last year.

A member of the Brisbane Roar’s Australia Cup 2023 campaign, Klein is a Young Socceroos train-on squad member who originally hails from Gympie Diggers. Position: Attack

A Young Socceroos train-on squad member originally from Queensland Lions, Nguyen can find the back of the net. Watch for his striking prowess across the season.

Club: Brisbane Roar

Position: Midfielder

From the famous Brisbane City nursery, the Kelvin Grove State College student plays NPL competition for the Roar. He is a technically correct player with class and football IQ. For all his skills, he is a respectful young man.

Position: Midfielder

Smart and hard working, Kelvin Grove State College student Babbage brings silky skills to the pitch. Watch for his impact during the Queensland Schools Premier League finals next month.

Dohyup Lee

Club: Lions FC U23

Position: Midfielder

Dohyup Lee hails from the Olympic FC where the Kelvin Grove State College student made a name himself as a classy centre mid. He is a great worker, has an unbelievable pass and is composed under pressure.

Position: Striker

Originally from the Buderim Wanderers FC, the Brisbane Roar product has been playing so well, he was short-listed for the Australian under 16s.

Club: Taringa Rovers U23/Mens

Position: Defender

A schoolboy at Kelvin Grove State College, Dent is a natural leader who is strong around the ball and renowned for his hard work.

Club: Brisbane City U23/Mens

Position: Midfielder/Winger

An Eastern Suburbs FC junior, Rafael Alvis is at that outstanding football finishing school of Kelvin Grove State College. He is an x-factor player, at times unpredictable but a constant threat with amazing dribbling skills.

Club: Brisbane City U16/18

Position: Midfielder

A wonderful passer with natural football IQ, Kelvin Grove State College student Young is a real midfield general who is always respectful.

Orlando Spallek-Caballero

Club: Lions FC U18/23s

Position: Midfielder

Watch for his hard working midfielder who has lovely finishing touches. A student at Kelvin Grove State College, Spallek-Caballero has those silky skills.

The athletic Debele bristles with acceleration and speed. Throw in his composure, unselfish and work ethic and any team would be delighted to have this Marsden SHS student in their side. He is also excellent in one-on-one defending and has an ability to read the game.

A Gold Coast United FC junior ace is the ultimate professional, technically gifted with an outstanding work rate. He was recently named in the U16 QLD Schoolboys team and will have an instant combination with a host of outstanding Gold Coast Knights juniors in the side including Yamato Wilson, Ted Callaghan, Jordan Bekavac, Evan Kwan and Theo Buxton.

James Durrington

Club: Gold Coast United FC

Position: Attacker

Technically gifted, Durrginton can unlock defences with his passing range or his one-on-one ability. The PBC SHS student was recently named in the U17-19 QLD Schoolboys team

Club: FQ Academy Metro

Position: Attacker

A Gold Coast Knights junior, Christian Mladenis is a special talent who is a thrilling Coast junior who has been on the radar for some time.

Club: Gold Coast United FC

Position: Attacker

Another United ace, PBC SHS student Porter is lightning quick with the ability to beat defenders on either side of him. Porter was recently named in the U16 QLD Schoolboys team.

Position: Defender

Barlow is a rising talent that has continued to polish his skills and attributes each season. In 2023 he was selected into the Queensland under 19’s schoolboys team and is a current player for the Sunshine Coast Wanderers Men’s U23 team.

Club: Gold Coast United FC

Position: Centre back

A centre back who reads the play intelligently, PBC SHS Myers has a wide range of passing and recently played his way into the U19 Queensland Schoolboys team.

Club: Sunshine Coast Fire

Harrison is a technically gifted player and can escape high pressure situations using his sublime ball skills and awareness. From Sunshine Beach State High School, his spacing and football IQ are some of his leading traits.

A defensive midfielder that breaks up attacks with big tackles, PBC SHS student Baldwin was recently named in the 17-19 Years Queensland Schoolboys team.

David Russell

Club: Nerang Eagles FC

A Robina SHS student, Russell has played his way into the under 19 Queensland schoolboys team and was an automatic selection on this list.

School: St Teresa’s Catholic College

The Sunshine Coast youngster has been on many coaches and club radars for a few years now as he continues to overcome whatever challenges are placed in front of him. Vitigliali,

from St Teresa’s Catholic College, impressed at the regional level in 2023, earning a spot as a shadow player for the under 19’s Queensland schoolboys team.

Zach Roulston

Club: Sunshine Coast Fire

Position: Midfielder

Roulston has continued to climb the schoolboys and club representative ranks after impressive performances at the Queensland under 19s schoolboy carnival earlier this year. Roulston, from Chancellor State College, is a crafty number 10 that can float in and out of the play when required. He is a strong player on the ball, a technical thinker and excels at creating space and opportunities for players around him.

Blake Koitka

Club: Sunshine Coast Fire

Position: Goalkeeper

A rising individual talent that seems to create a brick wall for opposition attackers inside the box. Koitka reflexes and positioning are his main traits but can also deliver key long passes to his midfield and attacking threats. Koitka, of Peregian Beach College, was selected in the under 16’s Queensland schoolboys team in 2023.

Hibiki Tomioka

Club: Gold Coast Knights

Position: Midfield

From Southport High School, Tomioka is a smart, two footed creative midfielder. He is an unselfish type with a high work ethic and is clever with his own goals and his assists. Tomioka has a couple of pretty handy teammates with him at Southport SHS, including

Tanaj Kunst and Kayden Carden, but Tomioka is a real eye-catcher.

Sani Logoro

Club: St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace

Position: Attacking

The goal scoring ace gave his side punch alongside all-star power of Aussie representative and Terrace teammate Ince (see earlier in the story). Logoro makes a habit of finding the back of the net.

Olly Jonata

Club: Rochedale Rovers

The Rovers have a vast array of shining juniors and one who shines brightest at the moment is Jonata. He attends Marsden SHS where he also receives high class tution, including from Andy Garside. Also note another Rovers junior, Freddie Cruse, as a player respected by his opposition.

Kohen Allen

Junior club: Mareeba Bulls

Named in the Queensland Representative School Sport Football Team, the FNQ product now based in Brisbane North will also represent Queensland at the National Youth Championships in Sydney starting on October 2. He is also in the Queensland schoolboys 17-19 years side.

Finlay Bath

Club: United Park Eagles

A Wide Bay Men’s All-Stars team member, Bath hails from the sporting rich Wide Bay and late last week helped his club swoop to a thrilling McDonald’s Football Queensland Premier League Wide Bay Men’s Grand Final win. Bath has made the 17-19 Years Queensland Representative School Sport Football Team.

Club: Peninsula Power

Position: Goalkeeper

Coulibaly is a real golden glove whose keeping skills ensure the Queensland School Sport Football Team is in good hands.

Position: Midfield

A genuine goal scorer, he is fast and strong and sends alarm bells singing when he works his way toward the stoppers while playing for Kelvin Grove State College. He made the Queensland under 16 team competing at the National Youth Championships.

Nick Hardiman

Club: Gold Coast United FC

Position: Goalkeeper

Queensland is blessed with exciting goalkeeping talent and Hardiman is as good as any rookie. He recently made his NPL debut playing for Olympic FC where he made a spectacular save. He is in the 17-19 Years Queensland schoolboys side.

Kingston Vaitusi

Club: Brisbane City FC

He has been in the City colours since he was almost a babe in arms and has progressed to be named in the Queensland under 16s.

Ryan Mcwhinney and George Plusnin

Club: Brisbane City

Teammates at famous Brisbane City, both boys will represent Queensland at the National Youth Championships, with Plusnin one of the goalkeepers in the squad.

Club: Brisbane Roar FC

Herrington was named in the 2023 AFC U-17 Asian Cup training squad and will represent Queensland at the National Youth Championships later this week. A Year 10 student at Churchie, Herrington is great in the air and has a great long pass and has a terrific attitude.

Ethan Jones and Zane North

Club: Brisbane Roar FC

The Brisbane Roar academy player Jones will be representing Queensland in back to back seasons after playing for the state under 15s in 2022.

Norths’ is another high achiever who this year was invited to the Joeys five-day domestic training camp ahead of the U17 Asian Cup.

The pair were joined in the young Maroons 16s by fellow Roar teammates, Gold Coast Knights junior Oliver Reid, stoic defender Kobi Griffiths, midfielder Declan Warnes and

Bukuna Iyendja.

Position: Striker

From the Cavendish Road SHS football program, the Olympic FC junior is a powerful player who can hold the ball up or break the line. His school’s captain during its Queensland Schools Premier League campaign, Kljajic is lethal with both feet.

An acrobatic keeper from the Holland Park Hawks junior nest, Flannery can also deliver a quality ball in the flow of play. Watch for him to Cavendish Road SHS’s vault during the Queensland Schools Premier League finals next month.

Position: Centre Back

Good in the air and on the ground, Dudley brings solid defensive qualities to any team he is involved with.

Position: Centre midfield

A Helensvale SHS student who came through the Crusaders’ ranks and then onto Gold Coast United, Boyd is the baby of our list who last year earned the Brisbane Roar U13 Player of the Year award. He is a box to box midfielder who possesses a high technical ability and relentless work rate with and without the ball. He is known for his professional attitude which can be infectious across his teammates and peers at the Helensvale SHS junior football program.

Club: Moreton Bay United FC

This dynamic duo were identified early by Football Queensland talent scouts when, as under 13 players at the prolific Moreton Bay United FC, they were named in Football Queensland’s Talent Support Program. Now the boys were preparing to play for the Queensland under 16s at the National Youth Championships.

Football officials have seen this talented youngster coming for some time through the Peninsula Power system and he will be ready to again impress playing for Queensland at the National Youth Championships which start later this month.

If you asked other players on this list to name the top 50, for example, of their peers currently playing, then this name would come up. Josipovic is from Cavendish Road SHS and currently plays for Lions. He is not to be confused with his brother Luka who graduated from Cav Rd last year and is also a Lions’ junior.

A goalkeeper of considerable prowess, Shortland will be in the thick of the action playing for the Queensland under 16s at the National Youth Championships. Full Queensland Maroons and White under 16 team list a little further down in the story.

Ollie is a hard working defensive midfielder who has shone in the U16 FQ league. He has been with Magic throughout his junior years and has a bright future in the game.

Tamaho has been an amazing addition to our U18s team, showing brilliant combative skills in midfield, an eye for a pass and the ability to carry the ball up the field. His consistency has been awesome, resulting in a debut for the men’s FQPL2 team against top of the league Broadbeach United - a great achievement.

Position: Attacking mid

Now 19, the Toowoomba Grammar School old boy made our top 40 schoolboy talent list last season. Playing for Brisbane Strikers this year, Broderick scored one of the goals of the season with an extraordinary strike from inside his own half.

Anshu Ale

Club: Brisbane Strikers

Of Nepalese decent, the 17-year-old is one of those glistening raw talents who just had to be mentioned in this company.

Tamaho Perry

School: Helensvale SHS

Position: Centre mid

New to the Gold Coast this season from New Zealand, Perry has been one of the finds of the season during the Queensland Schools Premier League. His quality technique and uncompromising in defence adds a dimension to the Helensvale finals’ campaign that already boosts right winger Joseph Saunders and Nick Lawrie as flair players in attack.

Cole Fenton is an exciting young player who provides a composed defensive presence at the back. He has been a part of our program for four years and has developed into an impressive young player. Cole is currently playing in an Academy age-group above, which is a testament to his skill. We look forward to seeing where this path takes him.

Porter Mckenna is a young football player known for his quick feet and eye-catching flair on the ball. He has been a part of the Academy program since 2022 and has shown massive development over the past 18 months. The 10-year-old will be joining the club’s UK Football Tour next month against some of the best academies in the World.

Levi Murphy is a talented young player with impressive ability on the ball and a keen eye for goal. He joined our Academy program and has been a pleasure for coaches to watch grow. Levi will also be a part of the club’s UK Football tour next month where he will showcase his talent to some of the best academies in the world.

Callum McDonald has football in his blood, replicating his dad’s goal scoring threat and technical ability on the pitch. Callum excels with his dribbling ability and glides past some of the toughest defenders with ease. Rome Lolesi is an extremely talented young player with impressive technical ability, and an elite mentality beyond his years. He joined our academy program in 2021, and during the 2023 season earned the chance to play in the Academy age group one year above. Rome will be one of the players showcasing his talent on the club’s UK Football Tour next month where we have no doubt he will be successful.

Team - U13

Harrison has had a fantastic season in 2023, showing superb dribbling skills combined with a

brilliant eye for goal. He will have a highlight reel to be proud of, scoring numerous goals of the season contenders and many from distance.

Rian Collett

Age - 14

Team - U14

Rian re-joined Magic this year after beginning his football with us at 6 years old. Rian has a relentless work ethic and plays with no fear therefore named captain due to his leadership qualities. Rians biggest asset is winning tackles in the midfield and setting the pace for every game. He is very understanding and aware as a player and always looks to find ways to break down opposition and guide his team. He has also represented Magic in the TSP program for Qld. He has a great mentality and never gives up - which is what separates him from the rest.
