The Qld boys under 17 cricket squad has been unveiled and includes a scorching Sunshine Coast batting bolter and the son of a gun. More here, along with the Stats Sheet Kings of the elite Taverners competition.

Thrilling Sunshine Coast batsman Zac Robinson, the son of a former Bulls ace and a swarm of Ipswich Hornets’ players were members of the Queensland under 17 squad preparing for the nationals.

Will Noffke, whose dad Ashley was an elite allrounder who was cruelly robbed of the 2003 Ashes tour by injury, makes the squad alongside Scorchers’ teammate Robinson.

Robinson has raised the eyebrows of the selectors with his return this season.

The Maroochydore senior cricket player has always been a dasher across the 50-over and T20 formats, but is starting to build innings’ and is a fine prospect.

And Ipswich Hornets aces Charles Lachmund, Rohan Brady and Joe Sippel have all been rewarded with selection in the extended squad.

Lachmund, a genuine fast bowler, was strongly considered for our Future’s squad we named last week. He is arguably the finest junior prospect at Ipswich.

Close behind him is Brady, a batting allrounder who bowls tight off spin and who is a busy, compact top order batsman from Stanthorpe.

Joe Sippel is just a run machine for Ipswich - but he is also a classy wicket keeper and top order batsman.

Stylish Sea Eagles’ batsman Harley Malpass, an Iona College student, along with Best of the West pair Michael Neumann and Sohann Sharma (both Wests), made the squad.

Nudgee College First XI new ball bowler Angus McLean is one of three Gators while Toombul’s ace spinner Eshwin Kapoor continues to turn potential into performance.

Highly rated Gold Coast rookie Jackson Steinhardt and inspiring South Brisbane player Eddie Leslie were also deserving selections.

The extended squad, which will be trimmed closer to the nationals, is: Angus McLean (Sandgate Redcliffe), Charles Lachmund (Ipswich), Damon Bass (Sandgate Redcliffe), Eddie Leslie (South Brisbane), Eshwin Kapoor (Toombul), Harley Malpass (Wynnum), Henry King (Cairns Rovers), Jackson Steinhardt (Gold Coast), Joe Sippel (Ipswich), Lakshdeep Singh (Sandgate Redcliffe), Michael Neumann (Western Suburbs), Rohan Brady (Ipswich), Sohann Sharma (Western Suburbs), Steven Hogan (Sandgate Redcliffe), Will Noffke (Sunshine Coast), Zac Robinson (Sunshine Coast).

An interesting selection is St Patrick’s College Year 10 student Steven Hogan, who remarkably made his first grade debut last Saturday for Sandgate Redcliffe. He was the Taverners Queensland Under 17 leading runs scorer (613) as we head into the final game of the home-and-away-season.

Hogan, who averages 87.57, has had eight innings with a high score of 145, although he hit 114 in a 215 run victory over Toombul last Saturday.

But it gets better.

He will indeed feature in the Gators first grade side over the summer.

Sandgate-Redcliffe cricketers Lakshdeep Singh and Steven Hogan are the respective leading wicket-takers and run scorers of the Taverners Under 17s competition.

In our Stats Kings story below, Hogan is also No.44 on the leading wicket takers list (nine wickets), which is headed by his Sandgate-Redcliffe teammate Lakshdeep Singh who has 25 wickets (84 overs) so far this season.

Singh also takes wickets in the Gators second grade side.

Having claimed a fifer this season, Singh is three wickets clear of the next bowler which is Charlie Lachmund (22 wickets, 78.5 overs).

University quick William Parkinson, University bowler Harry Langdon, Darling Downs opener Dylan Fedrick and Sunshine Coast scorcher Will Noffke round out the top six rankings after a three wicket effort by Langdon shot him up the list following the completion of the latest round.

There has not been one week so far this season where we have not mentioned Singh. He is the spin king who often takes three wickets to help the Gators seal the deal.

Coming in second on the top run scorers list is exciting BBC batter Blake Armstrong, who overtook Zac Robinson from the Sunshine Coast after yet another half century in round nine of the season.

Indeed Armstrong has been in fine form with the bat, delivering 394 runs for University as opening batter.

A capable spin bowler (11 wickets at 22), Armstrong has been excellent against the new ball, as supported by his average of 49.25

No wonder University are first on the ladder.

Mr Reliable Robinson, the third highest run scorer, was having a stellar season averaging just under 55 with the bat with a high score of 110 and 384 runs to his name.

He has time to overtake Armstrong but there is no chance of tracking down Hogan.

Ipswich Cricket was also well represented with batting duo Joe Sippel (360 runs at 45) and Rohan Brady (340 runs at 48.57) ranked at fourth and eighth respectively.

Valley all-rounder William Tozer has also been a force this season.

The Padua student has scored 177 runs at just under 30 while he has been a weapon with the ball, having claimed 10 wickets.
