State Cup T20 school cricket finals: Players to Watch

Southern Conference titleholders West Moreton Anglican College (WestMAC) are the new State Cup Intermediate Junior Girls Champions after a stunning bowling performance led by hat-trick hero Samantha Bremner this morning.

Mercy College, who had flown down from Mackay, were all out for 16 runs, following a brilliant bowling blitzkrieg by the WestMAC team at Marchant Park, Brisbane.

WestMAC’s bowling attack was spearheaded by all-rounder and medium-fast bowler Samantha Bremner, who took 5/11 including a hat trick, Trinity Doyle, 2/3, and Celia Schmidt,1/2, in a team effort applauded by WestMAC Principal Geoff McLay.

“Winning the State Cup is a deserving reward to the girls for their hard work in developing and honing their skills and team work. We are very proud of the girls and are thankful to Mr Doyle, their coach, a member of the knowledgeable WestMAC sports department, for his commitment and passion to the team,’’ Mr McLay said.

Some of the Players to Watch at the State Cup included the following.

Mercy College:

Intermediate: Kiana Dunn is a run scoring and wicket taking machine who will back up for the seniors in the afternoon.

In the Seniors, Isabella Sammut is a strong top order batter who will form a partnership with Meghan McCartney at the top. Runs from those two will be crucial to taking out the championship.

Fairholme College Toowoomba:

From Georgia Voll’s old score, Lucy Neumann is a Queensland School Sport representative, an opening batter who will take the gloves and lead the team.

West MAC:

West Moreton Anglican College are Southern Conference Champions, and they will be

playing the Northern Conference Champions Mercy College, Mackay.

Trinity Doyle is an all-rounder, a left-hand bat and left-arm fast bowler who will open the bowling and bat at No.3.

The 14-year-old is a rookie who dreams of representing Queensland and Australia.

“From playing cricket at WestMAC, we realise how many opportunities are available now for

female cricketers which is exciting,’’ Doyle said.

“My dream is to represent Queensland like Queensland and Australian star Holly Ferling.’’

She is playing first grade for the Ipswich Hornets Women’s Cricket Team and recently scored 46 not out off 50 balls.

She was also selected in the inaugural Woman’s BPL comp for the Gold Coast Waveriders and produced strong performances throughout the tournament.

Doyle is one of four players in the Met-West Under 15 team – also including Celia

Schmidt, Laura Brown and Samantha Bremner. Samantha Dewar is the shadow player.

Samantha Bremner is a premier grade bowler for Ipswich who has had a strong start to the season with wickets against Sandgate Redcliffe and Souths recently.

Celia Schmidt (bowler/all-rounder) and Laura Brown (wicketkeeper) all play second grade for Ipswich Hornets.

Schmidt said it was an exciting tournament. “It’s really exciting because a lot of our team haven’t played cricket before, and they have learnt all their skills here at WestMAC.

“To be given the opportunity to represent WestMAC and to make the Queensland final is a

massive deal.

“The girls are very excited and thankful and looking forward to the final. We are

all good friends, so we have a strong bond.’’

Principal Geoff McLay praised the “commitment and passion shown by our WestMAC girls’’.

Ignatius Park:

The Sadler brothers. Cody and Connor, are strong all-rounders in the senior cricket ranks in Townsville. Wickets and runs from them will be required to take down The Southport School.

Rockhampton Grammar:

Rory Connor is a bowling all-rounder who hits the ball hard. A contribution with bat and ball on Monday will keep his team in the hunt.

Brisbane SHS

Jack Howard, a BEARS representative, played well in the Southern Conference Finals.

TSS

Bris Heat member Jack Sinfield and state under 17 representative Lachlan Crump will lead the charge.

Both boys will spearhead a squad which will be the mirror image of the 2021 GPS First XI premiership winning side, with all the Year 12s committing to play.

They will be passing on their experience to the year 11 players who will represent TSS in the 2022 GPS premiership. The only player missing is Tom Gossett (injured).
